The panoramic scenery from Spinalonga is truly remarkable, stretching all the way to Agia Marina beach and Paralia Plakas. This location stands out as one of the premier viewpoints in Eastern Crete, offering a unique perspective of the coastline and the surrounding landscape.
While Balos Lagoon in West Crete is undeniably one of the best places to visit on the island, Spinalonga offers its own unique allure. One of these spots in the eastern part of the island is the Archaeological Site of Olous, sunken ancient city of Crete that is ideal for paddle boarding. The charm of the Elounda windmills nearby adds a unique touch to the landscape, making it a perfect backdrop for a leisurely day spent exploring the area.
Best Beaches with Palm Forest
When it comes to the stunning beaches of Crete, I find myself torn between the beauty of Preveli Beach in the West and Vai Beach in the East. Both locations offer amazing palm forest, making it difficult to choose a favorite. Reaching Preveli Beach does require a bit of determination, as there are numerous steps to navigate down to the sandy shores.
Preveli Beach captivates me with its picturesque river that flows into the sea, surrounded by a lush forest of palm trees nestled in the gorge. The sight of the palm trees swaying gently in the breeze adds a tropical feel like from Mexico.
In contrast, Vai Beach offers a more accessible experience, with parking conveniently located just a short stroll away from the beach. However, traveling by car from Elounda to this destination requires a journey of about 2 hours. On the other hand, if you’re coming from Chania to Preveli, the trip is a bit shorter, taking approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.
It is worth mentioning that Vai Beach boasts the largest natural colony of date palm trees in Europe. This is definitely one of the best places to visit in East Crete.

If you are looking for an alternative to Seitan Limania in Eastern Crete, Kolokitha Beach is the best choice. The water is crystal clear, and the picturesque surroundings make it one of the best hidden gems in East Crete. We couldn’t resist the allure of this beautiful spot, so we decided to hike for about an hour from our hotel, TUI BLUE Elounda Breeze. While the hike was enjoyable, we quickly realized that renting a car would have been a smarter choice.
Getting back to TUI BLUE Elounda Breeze turned into a bit of a challenge, but thankfully, a friendly tourist offered us a lift, which saved the day. We found that the people we met in East Crete were exceptionally warm and welcoming, often offering rides when they saw us in need.
Unlike Seitan Limania, which is known for many roaming goats, Kolokitha Beach was a much more serene experience. We only spotted one goat during our time there. The beach itself was far superior for swimming and relaxation, with its calm waters inviting us to take a dip. If you’re ever in the area, I highly recommend visiting Kolokitha Beach; it truly is a hidden gem that deserves to be experienced.
Best Beaches with Caves
West Crete – Cave Lera
One of my favorite spots to explore in West Crete is Cave Lera, which offers stunning views of Gold Coast Beach. The journey from Chania is quite manageable, taking only about 40 minutes by bus. The path leading up to the cave is surrounded by unspoiled landscape and it’s a perfect spot to appreciate the beauty of West Crete, making every effort to get there worthwhile.
East Crete – Beti Beach Caves
One of the things I truly adore about East Crete is the abundance of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. During our vacation, we stumbled upon a charming little spot called Beti Beach, and we instantly fell in love with it. This beach is nestled among stunning sea caves that invite exploration. The best part is that we didn’t need to hop on a boat to experience this natural wonder.
Central Crete – Matala Beach Caves
Matala Beach Caves located in Central Crete are man-made, and while there is a small entrance fee to access them, I found the experience to be well worth it. In fact, I believe these caves are even more impressive than the sea caves I had previously explored in Cyprus!
If you’re planning to visit these fascinating caves, I highly recommend staying in the Heraklion area, which is conveniently located about an hour’s drive from Matala Beach. For those coming from Elounda in East Crete, it takes around two hours to reach the caves. It’s a bit longer – approximately two hours and twenty minutes—from Chania in West Crete.
We decided to visit the Matala Beach Caves during our two-week holiday in western Crete. Since I spent only one week in East Crete, I chose not to make the drive to Central Crete this time around. I knew I would return to this beautiful island someday, so I focused on exploring as much of the eastern part as possible.

To reach this location, you’ll need to rent a car, as it is somewhat off the beaten path. Once you arrive at the Kedrodasos Beach Parking area, be prepared for a short hike to the beach itself.
Kedrodasos is conveniently located near Elafonisi, making it easy to explore both beaches in a single day. This proximity allows you to enjoy the unique features of each spot, from the pink sands of Elafonisi to the serene, natural beauty of Kedrodasos.
While we were enjoying our time at Oscar Suites & Village in Agia Marina, we were fortunate enough to encounter some excellent wave conditions on the beach. This area is truly a wonderful spot for a getaway, featuring a variety of charming boutique hotels that are conveniently located near the shoreline. One standout option closer to Chania is Domes Noruz Chania, Autograph Collection. My previous experience at an Autograph Collection hotel in Yucatan, Mexico, was nothing short of exceptional. Private swimming pools that offers breathtaking views of the beach at Paralia Agii Apostoli make it a perfect getaway for a luxury stay in West Crete.

If you’re considering a getaway to East Crete, you’ll find yourself with an abundance of options when it comes to luxurious all-inclusive five-star hotels. Among the top choices is the Elounda Mare Hotel, Relais & Chateaux. This hotel provides convenient access to charming cove beaches, ensuring that guests can easily enjoy the sun and sea right at their doorstep.
During our vacation in East Crete, we had the pleasure of staying at the TUI BLUE Elounda Breeze, a four-star hotel. I can confidently say it was the best hotel experience we’ve had in Greece, and we make it a point to visit this beautiful country every summer.

We had the option to take a bus to Palaiochora, but since I was traveling with friends, we opted to rent a car for the convenience it offered. Upon arriving in Palaiochora, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn’t overrun with tourists.
The views from Castel Selino were breathtaking, with Thick Sand Beach on one side and Chalikia Beach on the other, creating a stunning backdrop that made the trip worthwhile. For instance, when we set out to visit Richtis Gorge, we parked our car in a nearby village and embarked on a hike that took us over an hour to reach Paralia Richti.
The trek was certainly demanding, but we were lucky because a couple of fellow travelers offered to drive us to the parking lot at Richtis Gorge. At first, we were hesitant about driving there, as the road didn’t look very safe and parking was limited.
Once we arrived at the Richtis Gorge waterfall, I was completely captivated by its natural beauty. If you’re planning a visit to Richtis Gorge, I highly recommend setting aside a few hours, or even an entire day, to fully immerse yourself in the experience.
West Crete Best Waterfall
Getting to Kourtaliotiko Gorge in the west part of the island is a much quicker journey than reaching the Richtis Gorge waterfall. After parking your car, you can easily hike to the waterfall in just about 15 minutes.
However, getting up close to the waterfall at Kourtaliotiko Gorge presents its own set of challenges. To truly appreciate its splendor, you will have to swim through some deep, cold water, which can be quite a daunting task.
Capturing the perfect photo of the waterfall is another difficulty. The water cascades down from the rocks and it creates a misty spray, making it difficult to get a clear shot. After some searching, we stumbled upon Taverna Despina, conveniently situated between the stunning Kourtaliotiko Gorge and the picturesque Preveli beach.
One of the advantages of Taverna Despina was the affordability of the menu, especially when compared to the more touristy areas like Agia Marina. As we savored our meals, we were treated to stunning views of the surrounding landscape, making the experience even more memorable.
Damnoni Taverna
Moussaka stands out as one of the best dishes of Greek cuisine. During our travels through West Crete, we sampled moussaka at various restaurants, but one of them was truly exceptional – Damnoni Taverna. Nestled right next to the picturesque Damnoni beach, this charming restaurant is enveloped by a canopy of olive trees, providing a serene and shaded environment that enhances the enjoyment of every bite.
For those looking to indulge in the culinary delights of Damnoni Taverna, I highly recommend considering a stay at one of the nearby accommodations. Options like Sokol Resort, Mythos Apartments, or Hapimag Resort Damnoni offer convenient access to not only the delectable food but also the stunning natural beauty that surrounds the area.
Kantari Restaurant
Kantari Restaurant has quickly become one of our top choices in Platanias, and it’s easy to see why. The canopy of olive trees creates a serene and inviting atmosphere that enhances the dining experience. Each dish is presented with such care and artistry, making every meal feel like a special occasion. If you’re in the mood for a delightful appetizer, I highly suggest sampling dumplings at Kantari Restaurant.
Taverna Mouraki
Souvlaki is another beloved culinary delight in Greece that you simply cannot miss. When making your way from Balos to Falassarna, be sure to take a break at Taverna Mouraki, where you can savor this delicious dish. The taverna not only serves up delicious souvlaki but also boasts stunning views of Falassarna Beach, making it a perfect pit stop on your journey.
Golden Bay Bar Restaurant
The first time we tasted Stifado in Corfu, we were truly amazed by this Greek dish. Its rich flavors left a lasting impression on us, making it clear that ordering Stifado again in Crete would be a safe and delicious choice. With that in mind, we set our sights on the Golden Bay Bar Restaurant, nestled within the Golden Bay Hotel, and known for its breathtaking views of Paralia Agii Apostoli Beach.
Othonas Taverna
When you find yourself in Rethymno, don’t miss the opportunity to dine at Othonas Taverna. During our visit, one of our friends opted for the Chicken Gyros, a classic choice that you will also not regret.
Meanwhile, we decided to try something different and went for the Chicken in Sauce, which proved to be an excellent decision. Each bite was truly delicious, showcasing the restaurant’s commitment to quality ingredients and traditional cooking methods.
Pirgos Restaurant
If you’re looking to switch things up from traditional Greek dishes such as moussaka or chicken gyros, consider stopping by Pirgos Restaurant in Agia Marina. This restaurant offers a delightful lamb dish and exceptional Greek salad, which I can confidently say is the best I’ve tried in Crete.
Restaurant Zephyros
If you’re feeling uncertain about which Greek dish to sample, why not opt for Greek Meze? This option allows you to enjoy a variety of small plates that are perfect for sharing with family and friends right in the center of the table.
One of the best aspects of ordering Greek Meze is the opportunity to taste multiple dishes without committing to just one. In my experience, moussaka served in smaller portions as part of a Greek Meze spread is particularly delightful.
Is East or West Crete Warmer?
During our visit to Eastern Crete in October, we were pleasantly surprised by the fantastic weather. While I believe that October might be a bit late for a trip to the Ionian Islands like Kefalonia or Zakynthos, Crete remains a wonderful destination that is definitely worth considering even after the summer season has ended.
Prior to my second journey to Crete, a colleague of mine mentioned that the island is known for its windy conditions. However, I don’t recall experiencing any significant winds in Eastern Crete. It wasn’t until we ventured into Western Crete that I noticed a distinct change in the weather.
During our exploration of the western part of the island between August and September, the gentle breeze provided a refreshing comfort. I can confidently say that Eastern Crete tends to be slightly warmer than West Crete.
If you’re considering a trip to Crete during the low season, Eastern Crete might be the more favorable option for your travels. On the other hand, visiting Western Crete even in high season offers delightful weather that is ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities such as hiking.
