How is it possible that the island with an area of almost 800km² is not so popular among the tourists? Whether you are wondering if there are any things to do in Kefalonia, I will show you some of the best places on this Greek island.

Things to do in Kefalonia
Kefalonia in particular is an island of wonders about which Greeks do not speak loudly. They try to protect the island from mass tourism and as you know, miracles attract tourists. However, it is not about the wonders of nature, which are in abundance in Kefalonia. Every year on August 6th, snakes appear in the village of Markopoulos in the church of Panagia Lagouvarda. Long with a sign of the cross on their heads and tongues crawl all over the church. Especially, around the Panagia icon. On August 15th, snakes immediately disappear after the liturgy to reappear again next year.

Snakes in the church herald a good year. In Kefalonia, snakes did not appear only twice before the tragic events. In 1940, when World War II reached Greece, and before the earthquake that affected Kefalonia in 1953. No one can explain this phenomenon, especially the fact that the snakes in the church are harmless. The inhabitants of Kefalonia believe that touching the holy snakes brings happiness and can heal illnesses. What’s more, crowds of believers allow the snakes to crawl around their bodies. They believe in the power of this amazing phenomenon.

1. Wonderful Kefalonia – Underground lake Melissani in Kefalonia Greece
Kefalonia has one of the greatest natural wonders in Europe. You do not have to go to →Mexico to admire the underground lakes. I’m sure the Melissani cave will steal your heart. Surrounded by a dense forest with amazing blue water, it’s breathtaking. The rays of the sun illuminating the underground lake create real magic!
Underground lake Melissani, Kefalonia
According to mythology, it is a nymph cave, and its name comes from one of them. An interesting fact is that the water in the lake is a mix of fresh water and salty water. You can sail on a boat on turquoise waters to see the beauty of the cave. On the one side, the Melissani cave is wonderfully illuminated. On the other side is a bit darker, covered with stalagmites and moss. The underground lake Melissani is a must-see attraction in Kefalonia. You can not miss a visit to this amazing cave. This place is very easily accessible from the nearby island of →Zakynthos

2. Drogarati Cave – One of the most beautiful caves in Europe
Another must-see attraction in Kefalonia. This is the most beautiful cave I have ever seen. Even the caves in →Mallorca have not made such a great impression on me as the Drogarati cave. Furthermore, the acoustic in this cave is just perfect. In addition, Luciano Pavarotti and Madonna had their concerts just right there. In the cave, there is a constant temperature of around 18 degrees. At a depth of 60 meters, there is a pleasant chill. A huge cave full of stalagmites and stalactites makes an amazing impression. Imagine that the stalactite grows just 1 cm within a hundred years. It is estimated that the Drogarati cave is over 100 million years old. This is a unique place that you must see.

3. Myrtos Beach – Landmark of Kefalonia Greece
It’s a real jewel of Greece. One of the most beautiful beaches in the world will charm everyone. A wonderful bay surrounded by cliffs with turquoise-milky water is a landmark of Kefalonia. A beautifully situated beach, full of white stones, makes an amazing impression. You can admire it from the viewing point, however, you can not refuse to drive down the serpentine road to the beach. The view from close-up is amazing, and swimming in turquoise waters is a must-do!

4. The picturesque Kefalonia – Agia Efimia Harbour
A small fishing village that will charm you. In the distance, you can see Itaka – the island of Odysseus. However, the town is the most impressive from the close-up. Greek cafes and taverns are located on the seafront, boats on the Ionian sea, and beautiful green hills around. In the port of Agia Efimia, you can feel the real Greek atmosphere.

5. Argostoli – The capital of Kefalonia
The city was almost destroyed by the earthquake in 1953. In the modern capital of Argostoli, you will find the Museum of Archeology and many restaurants and cafes. An interesting element of the city is the De Bosset Bridge, which is the largest stone bridge located on saltwater. In the Koutavos Lagoon where the bridge is located, you can see →Caretta Caretta turtles

Kefalonia in one day
We set off from →Zakynthos Our ferry arrived at the smallest port we have ever seen. Pessada port is the southernmost port of Kefalonia. Thanks to that it has a great connection with the island of Zakynthos. This place is very picturesque, but having a limited time is not worth staying there for longer.
Kefalonia, Greece
From the port of Pessada, we went to the Drogarati cave and the underground lake Melissani as soon as possible. We wanted to be there before all coaches from Zakynthos. After visiting those amazing places, we stopped in the beautiful port of Agia Efimia. The picturesque landscape of this place will make you fall in love with Kefalonia.

What to do next?
After taking photos in the port of Agia Efimia, it’s time for even more beautiful views. The view of the Myrtos beach from the top is breathtaking. However, we did not come there just to admire the views. Swimming in turquoise waters on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world is an experience!
Myrtos Beach, Kefalonia
After a long day of sightseeing, it’s time for a meal. If lunch is in Greek style, then only in Assos! Undoubtedly, it is one of the most picturesque villages on the island. The bay is surrounded by greenery and colorful houses. A similar atmosphere is also in the capital of the island, which was our last stop. In Argostoli, you will find many restaurants, cafes, and bars. It is the perfect place to end the day in one of the most spectacular Ionian sea islands.

If you would like to spend a bit more time in Kefalonia, there are many unique hotels to choose from. Whether, it is one of the best clothing-optional resorts perfect for adults or a family-friendly hotel, your stay in Kefalonia will be one of a kind.
