Mallorca Formentor

Top 10 things to do in Mallorca

Mallorca is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. There are many reasons to visit this place. Imagine an island with more than 250 beaches, beautiful mountains, and vibrant capital – Palma de Mallorca. Moreover, polish famous composer Frédéric Chopin fell in love with this island and created the most beautiful compositions throughout his entire career just right there. Nowadays, Mallorca attracts a lot of famous people such as Catherine Zeta-Jones, Claudia Schiffer, and James Blunt.

It is one of the four major Balearic Islands, which include Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera. There are also a few smaller islands on the Balearic Sea such as Cabrera, Dragonera, or S’Espalmador. All of those Spanish islands offer plenty of activities, beautiful beaches, and a great summer break.

Top 10 things to do in Mallorca

1. Visit the northernmost point of Mallorca – Cap de Formentor

The views from Mirador Es Colomer are incredible and it is just one of the viewing points in the Formentor peninsula. Spectacular cliffs with a height of even up to 300 meters attract a lot of visitors every year. Panoramic views of the sea and Serra de Traumuntana mountains create one of the most beautiful landscapes in Mallorca.

2. Explore the capital – Palma de Mallorca

The first attraction you must see is the La Seu Cathedral with a height of 44 meters. This is an enormous building with a beautiful view of the bay of Badia de Palma. The magnificent gothic cathedral impresses with its size and is the most beautiful building on the island.

In the second place, I would recommend visiting Bellver Castle. It is situated on top of the hill, barely 3 km away from the center of Palma de Mallorca. In my opinion, this is the best place to see the panorama of the capital. You can take a bus from the town center or if you have plenty of time you can just walk there.

Finally, remember to wander the streets of Palma’s Old Town. Here you will find many stylish shops, restaurants, and cafes. All of them are packed between picturesque, narrow streets. To sum up, briefly, it is one of the most interesting island capitals in Europe.

3. Take a train from Sóller

Originally used to transport citrus fruits from Sóller to the capital – Palma de Mallorca. Nowadays, it is one of the most extraordinary attractions on the island. This wooden train will get back to you in time. It is very slow but offers spectacular scenery during the whole journey.

4. Relax at the most beautiful beach in Mallorca

Cala Formentor is one of the European beaches where you can feel like in the Caribbean. The crystal clear turquoise sea will delight everyone. A long, sandy beach is surrounded by pine trees and mountains. This is unbelievable that such a beautiful spot is only a few hours’ flight from the main cities in Europe.

If you are a beach lover like me feel free to check out one of my posts with the most beautiful beaches in Europe. My favorite beach destinations are →Fuerteventura, →Zakynthos, and →Kefalonia.

5. Drive down the serpentine road to Sa Calobra

Undoubtedly, this is one of the most scenic routes in the world. 13 km long narrow road has many curves. It lies in marvelous scenery, stretches between mountainous landscapes with the view of the sea. Serpentine road to Sa Calobra offers unforgettable experiences.

6. Take one of the most scenic walks

The main attraction in Sa Calobra is Torrent de Pareis, which can be accessed through a carved passage in rocks. On the edge of the canyon, there is a pebble beach with incredibly blue water.

7. Book a trip to Cabrera island

This uninhabited island is home to a large number of endemic species. Due to the fact this place is a National Park, it is not possible to stay there overnight. However, there is an option to book one day trip to the island. I would highly recommend a visit there because this place is unspoiled beauty. You would be surprised how many lizards are running carelessly on this island. Furthermore, they are the main symbol of Mallorca.

8. Visit caves – Are caves in Mallorca worth visiting?

9. Enjoy a boat tour around Mallorca’s coastline

Mallorca is the largest Spanish island in the Balearic Islands and is a very popular holiday destination, especially for tourists from Germany. Many people fell in love with the stunning coast of Mallorca once they visit it. Maybe, it is worth exploring its true beauty during a boat trip.

10. Buy local products in Manacor

Manacor is mostly famous for furniture manufacture and artificial pearls. This town is located approximately a 1-hour drive from the capital. Due to its industrial look, this place is rather avoided by tourists. Besides the pearls, you can buy their Mallorcan alcohol. I suggest you look for a blue shop with ceramic decorations. You can taste there different alcohols such as hazelnut or banana liqueurs. I have to admit that we bought the best Spanish liqueurs just right there.

The east coast of Mallorca

This is the quietest part of the island, mostly visited by residents. The east coast is very pretty, formed with caves and coves. However, some of them are accessible only on foot. In my opinion, this is a perfect getaway from the crowds and I am sure you will love it if you are looking for a peaceful stay.

Beaches on the east part of the island:

Cala Murada

This beach is situated inside a small cove, surrounded by cliffs from one side. The water there is very clear, but it is also very deep. During strong wind waves, there can be high.

Cala Domingos

Very charming beach, actually two beaches, because Cala Domingos is divided into two parts. One of them is mainly used by guests from Club Hotel Tropicana. The other part can be accessed from Cales de Mallorca.

Cala Antena

Similar to Cala Domingos, this beach is located next to Cales de Mallorca. This beautiful bay lies by a steep cliff with plenty of greenery.

Playa de Porto Cristo

Besides the most famous attractions in Porto Cristo which are the caves Coves del Drach and the Coves dels Hams, it is also worth visiting the main beach. Playa de Porto Cristo is quite long and it is the ideal place to relax for families with children.

Where to stay in Cales de Mallorca?

Club Hotel Tropicana has been renovated and changed its name to Iberostar Cala Domingos. It was one of the friendliest hotels we have ever visited. It offers a lot of entertainment during the day and in the evening, so even if you are planning a solo trip you can meet plenty of new people. The resort offers accommodation in one-story bungalows in beautiful gardens, situated not far from the beach. It is a perfect choice if you want to rest far away from the crowds.
