Why La Fortuna is the best place for a family holiday?

By Stephanie from The Unknown Enthusiast

La Fortuna, Costa Rica is a fantastic family holiday from the UK due to its beautiful location. There are also family-friendly adventures galore, and it is a relatively inexpensive place to visit. (It’s pricier for Central America, but definitely still cheaper overall.) In fact, it truly has a variety of fun, interesting, and exciting activities for kids of all ages.

The Mistico hanging bridges are suspension bridges that are strung across the rainforest canopy. You can walk for several kilometers through the park, and every so often cross one of the high up suspension bridges. Bonus – at the first bridge you get a fantastic view of the Arenal volcano.

There are many adrenaline activities to do in La Fortuna, and ziplining is one of the most classic! Make sure to experience the thrills of sailing through the jungle as you zip between different platforms in the canopy at high speeds!

Moreover, La Fortuna sits in the shadow of the dormant Arenal volcano, and thanks to the geological activity, hot springs abound in La Fortuna. Stay at a hot springs resort, or just buy a day pass and enjoy the warm water and beautiful vegetation for the day.

Then, visit one of the many waterfalls in Costa Rica. Especially, the two beautiful ones near La Fortuna which are the Rio Celeste and the La Fortuna waterfall.

Finally, the El Salto River and rope swing is a free public rope swing set over the El Salto river. It’s a popular area to swing and swim with both visitors and locals alike.

The best places to eat, stay, and time to visit La Fortuna

The best time to visit La Fortuna is during the dry season, which is from mid-December to April. Visiting at the beginning of the rainy season (May-July) isn’t too bad. You’ll get some showers, but visitors do tend to be fewer. Weather is hot and humid year round, with highs from around 23-35°C. Staying at a hot springs resort is a great choice – Los Lagos Hot Springs are a particularly beautiful location. For lunch, check out Soda La Hormiga, and for dinner, don’t miss La Parada.

Why the Dominican Republic is the best place for a family holiday?

By Merry Allison from Virginia Vacation Guide

The Dominican Republic is a popular family destination due to its beautiful sandy beaches and has something to offer everyone. For instance, you can immerse yourself in the rich history of Santo Domingo. It is one of the oldest cities in the Americas.

Punta Cana features big beach resorts. Full of family-friendly amenities such as pools, slides, water parks, miniature golf, beach volleyball, and more. The country also offers warm weather year-round. It is generally more affordable than some other Caribbean destinations.

Bavaro Beach in Punta Cana features many all-inclusive resorts. It has great beaches and many 5 star amenities such as pools or spas. The Ciudad Colonial in Santo Domingo is a central location for many of the city’s major historical attractions. Make sure to visit the Cathedral of Santa María la Menor (the first and oldest cathedral in the Americas). Then, check out Alcázar de Colón Palace and Calle Las Damas. Saona Island in the south of the Dominican Republic is accessible by boat ride as a day excursion from Punta Cana. El Limon waterfall is located in the northern Samana region of the country. You can visit the waterfall on a picturesque guided horseback riding tour. Once you reach it, you will have the opportunity to swim underneath. This will be a magical experience.

The best time to visit the Dominican Republic

April and May are great months to visit the Dominican Republic because the weather is generally warm and dry. In those months the crowds are smaller than in the peak winter season. Traveling in the spring months also avoids the summer and fall hurricane seasons.

Where should you stay in the Dominican Republic?

In Santo Domingo, the Ciudad Colonial is one of the best areas to stay. You will be close to many historic sites. Likewise in Punta Cana, the Bavaro region is generally a great place to stay with many excellent resorts. One recommendation is RIU Palace. This all-inclusive 5-star resort features three swimming pools plus a children’s pool with slides. Also, a water park, four tennis courts, and numerous restaurants.

Why Negril in Jamaica is the best place for a family holiday?

By Kaidon from Planes, Trains, and Karcz

Taking holiday in Negril is a popular spot for UK families, who go to taste the brilliant coffee of the Blue Mountain and bask in the glorious hot sun near the dazzlingly blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. Almost all vacationers opt for a resort, which typically includes all-inclusive food and drinks, pools, and live entertainment. For those who venture offsite, either by resort-endorsed tours or local transportation, there are many amazing things to do in Jamaica.

The best place for a family holiday – Top 5 attractions in Negril area

Rick’s Cafe is an absolute must-see. While it’s called a cafe, it has a bit of a club feel to it. Live music is played every night, and the fare is excellent! If you bring a towel, there are a few surfaces to go cliff-diving from. You can watch locals do impressive tricks as they leap into the Caribbean below. Rick’s Cafe is built on the westernmost tip of Jamaica, so plan to be there for the most incredible sunsets over the ocean!

YS Falls can simply be stated as a paradise within paradise. A stunning falls that cascades over tiers of stone, with various pools to swim in. Below, the facilities offer food and have additional pools for swimming in.

Henry the Boatman is an easily-spotted, extremely gregarious soul with his name spray-painted on the side of his boat. While it may appear that his vessel should not be boarded, it runs well and Henry is eager to show you a good time on the water, and for a fraction of the price of most hotels. Snorkel trips, tours through the underground caves, passage to nearby islands, and a hilarious and joyful conversation the whole time you’re with him!

When is the best time to visit Negril?

There are a few schools of thought on when the best time to visit Negril is. On the one hand, wintertime is extremely popular for those who want to get out of their wintery climates in favour of some Vitamin D. This makes winter very busy and more expensive but gives a very much needed reprieve from colder weather in the dead of winter. Instead, try going in the summertime. The heat is easy to manage, given that you are only a few steps away from jumping in any pool or body of water! Hotels and attractions will be less busy, making it easier and more affordable for families to go to.

The best place for a family holiday – Top 5 attractions in Paris, France

No trip to Paris with kids is complete without a trip to see the Iron Lady. The Eiffel Tower is impressive when seen from anywhere in the city. However, kids love the old quirky elevators that take you to the top, and of course, the views of Paris from above are amazing too.

Head along to the Natural History Museum to take in the dedicated children’s gallery and the evolution gallery which displays jaw-dropping dinosaur skeletons! Right next door, the Jardin des Plantes is an excellent place to let them run around and get some fresh air afterward. For another garden with plenty to offer kids, head along to the Jardin du Luxembourg which features an adventure playground, puppet theatre, remote-controlled boats, and sometimes even pony rides!

For a more educational experience, the Palais de la Decouverte awaits to entertain with its interactive science and technology exhibits. Also, don’t forget about Disneyland Paris – a destination in itself for hours of family fun!

Spring is particularly beautiful season to visit Paris when the city is decked out with beautiful cherry blossoms. It’s not too hot, or too cold, and it’s not at its busiest before summer. For cheerful places to eat with kids, try Cafe Central or Cafezoide. And for a kid-friendly place to stay, look no further than Les Jardins De La Villa.

Why Elafonisi Beach is the best place for a family holiday?

By Dean and Laynni at Routinely Nomadic

The wonderful pink sand of unique Elafonisi Beach in Crete is quickly becoming one of the top family destinations in Greece. Although the beach itself is over an hour from the main city of Chania along narrow, winding roads, there are many direct flights to Crete from the UK. You could easily leave your house in the morning and be digging your toes into the unusual sand that afternoon.

The best place for a family holiday – Top 5 attractions in Elafonisi Beach, Greece

  • Pink sand
  • The shallow protected lagoon
  • Sea turtles
  • Snorkelling
  • Elafonisi Lighthouse

Not all the sand is pink, and it generally looks white from a distance. But the closer you get the pinker it looks, especially when the water laps over it. The shallow lagoon with its warm, calm water is the perfect place for little kids. Meanwhile, bigger kids can head out snorkeling among the many sea turtles that nest in the area. They can also walk to Elafonisi Lighthouse at low tide, located on top of the hill on Elafonisi Island.

Summer (June-September) is the high season on the beaches of Crete. However, the weather is usually very nice by April and it stays warm well into November. Visiting during the shoulder seasons avoids the hottest temperatures and most of the other tourists.

There are two snack shops right on Elafonisi Beach, as well as a few restaurants just up the hill. Elafonisi Resort, overlooking the beach, is a great place to stay. Also, you can just stop in for a meal at their delicious Taverna Kalomirakis.

Venice is a quick and easy flight from London.  This floating city is like nowhere else in the world.

The best place for a family holiday – Top 5 attractions in Venice, Italy

A trip to Venice would not be complete without a Gondola or water taxi ride.  See the magnificent Grand Canal and beautiful homes and hotels on it.

Visit the Rialto Bridge for shopping and fun. Then, go for a stroll down the maze of narrow streets in each direction. You will fall in love with the unique charm of this historic city.

Also, enjoy an interesting history lesson at Doge’s Palace. This historical building is known for Casanova being imprisoned here. Take the secret itinerary tour of the prison and walk over the famous Bridge of Sighs.

You will get the best view of Venice by visiting St. Mark’s Campanile in St. Mark’s Square. Make sure to bring a camera to capture these spectacular views at the top.

If time allows, travel to the nearby island called Murano. Here you will find some of the most beautiful glass craftsmanship.

When to visit and where stay, eat in Venice?

April, May, June, September, and October are the best months to visit Venice because of the ideal weather conditions. Try to avoid the earlier or later months due to heavy tourist traffic. After all, November through February are the cheapest months to travel.

One of the best hotels in Venice for families is the Londra Palace, a 5-star accommodation. Within a 3-minute walk to the Bridge of Sighs, you will enjoy being close to most of the main attractions. Upgrade to one of their deluxe rooms to get a coveted canal view.

The hotel is famous for Pyotr Ilyich Tschaikovsky who composed music here. As an added perk, guests have an elegant boat available for private tours.

You won’t have to leave the hotel to eat some of the best food in Venice. On the property is the delicious Do Leoni Restaurant & Bistrot. This highly rated restaurant serves seasonal fresh fish and meat courses.

Another great option for lunch and dinner is Al Covo. Sit outside at this charming rustic-style Venetian restaurant and eat some of the local cuisines including prawns and ceviche.

Sicily is a wonderful place to travel together with kids. There is something to tickle the whole family’s fancy. The island has sandy beaches, ice cream around every corner, and plenty of interactive museums. The ample amount of direct flights and child-friendly accommodations dotted around the island are the cherry on top of the sundae.

  • Agrigento: Traipse around the huge Greek Temples

  • Zingaro National Park: Go swimming in pristine waters without the crowds

Palermo en Catania is great for walking, trying the great street food (Arancina, Pane Ca Meusa), and dart in and out of museums. The real fun part is driving around the island to explore all the quaint villages in Sicily. Colorful Borgo Parini is modeled after Barcelona. Agrigento has better preserved Greek temples than even Greece. Marsala has beautiful windmills and salt flats that you can visit, as well as the best tuna sandwich on the island. And the Zingaro National Park offers a very safe and clean environment to go swimming for hours.

Where to stay and when should you visit Sicily?

Sicily is a top-notch destination year-round. However, it tends to get very busy and very hot (upwards of 40°C) in the summer months. The best months on the island are April, May, September, and October as they have ample amounts of sun and limited amounts of tourists. Base yourself in Palermo to visit the Western part of the Island and out of Ortigia if you want to explore to Eastern part of the Island. Though Sicily seems small, driving from Palermo to Ortigia will take 4 hours 30 minutes. Driving in Sicily is not for the faint-hearted, traffic rules are subject to interpretation as are speed limitations.

Why Dubrovnik is the best place for a family holiday?

By Becki from Meet Me In Departures

Dubrovnik is a popular destination for a family holiday due to its warm climate and bright turquoise seas. It has also short and direct flights from most of the UK cities. The city is a good hub to base yourself with most people spending one or two days in Dubrovnik Old Town, before exploring some of the other destinations around the city, along the coast, or island hopping.

The top thing to do in Dubrovnik is the city wall walk, the circuit features towers, turrets, and lookout points all over the city. From the city wall, you’ll be able to see the nature reserve of Lokrum Island, which can be accessed via a ferry boat from the Old Harbour. This island is filled with trees and quiet beaches making it an ideal spot for a picnic. Fort Lovrijenac offers great views over the city of Dubrovnik as well. If you’re feeling energetic, you can walk up Srd Hill but the easy option is to take the cable car. At the top, you’ll have fantastic panoramic views of the city, harbour, and nearby islands.

When should you visit Dubrovnik?

The best time to visit Dubrovnik is the shoulder season – July and August are too busy, so if possible try to visit during June or September. The weather is pleasantly warm from May through to October, with the hottest months being July and August. The best places to stay are just outside the city walls, inside the walls you’ll pay a premium on accommodation.

By Joanna from The world in my pocket

Mallorca is one of the most popular summer destinations for British families. The award-winning beaches are family-friendly and safe for children.

The best place for a family holiday – Top 5 attractions in Mallorca, Spain

Mallorca is a gem when it comes to its beaches. The turquoise-coloured water, which is crystal clear, the sandy beaches, and the stunning cliffs surrounding them are some of the reasons why people travel to the island during summer. One of the most beautiful, family-friendly beaches is Cala Mondrago, in the National Park of the same name. The National Park has little coves that can be accessed by small, easy walks, on a well-marked path. Furthermore, near Cala Mondrago you will find the fishing village of Cala Figuera. It is another pretty place in Mallorca. In addition, the Aquarium in Palma is always a hit for the little ones. It has glass tunnels through which you can walk and look at the fish swimming above your head.

The best time to visit Mallorca is between April and October. In winter, most of the hotels and restaurants in the resort towns close down. However, Palma and the other towns and villages on the island remain open. If you want to avoid crowds, winter is the perfect time to go to Mallorca. You will find all those gorgeous beaches empty.

When you visit Mallorca, make sure you eat at local restaurants. Avoid the ones aimed at tourists, with menus in English or German. After all, the local cuisine in Mallorca is fantastic and will be enjoyed by the little members of the family as well as the adults.

Undoubtedly, this is one of the most beautiful islands in the Balearics. Formentera boasts some of the best Balearic Island beaches and the longest stretches of white sand outside of the Caribbean. Unlike many of the rocky, craggy beaches you’ll find in neighboring islands and around the Mediterranean, these shallow, warm waters are perfect for swimming and snorkeling with kids. In fact, you can’t reach Formentera from the UK with direct flights. However, it’s easily accessible with direct flights to Ibiza. Just take a short ferry ride of around half an hour which is its own attraction in the beautiful blue waters of the Mediterranean.
