Explore Chania Lighthouse
During our recent vacation in Crete, we decided to rent a car to explore this beautiful island. We were fortunate enough to find a parking spot at Chania Town Car Park, conveniently located right next to the iconic Chania Venetian Harbor Guardhouse. I highly recommend arriving early in the day, as parking spaces can be quite limited, especially during the busy tourist season.
After securing our parking spot, we strolled towards the Chania Lighthouse, a stunning structure that dates back to 1864. This lighthouse stands on the site of an earlier Venetian lighthouse, which was originally built to safeguard the city from potential threats like pirates and invading forces. Chania Lighthouse fell into disrepair after the Turks captured the city in 1645.
This remarkable stone masonry tower rising 26 meters, has undergone several transformations over the years. It was rebuilt by Egyptian troops in 1864, who were assisting the Ottoman Empire in maintaining control over Crete. Although it suffered damage during World War II, it was beautifully refurbished in 2006, allowing visitors to appreciate its grandeur when visiting Chania.
I had the feeling that we had overlooked many of the area’s attractions during our visit to Chania. Eager to make the most of our time, we decided to return and delve deeper into the charm of Chania Harbour again. This time we hopped on a bus right next to our hotel, Oscar Suites & Village in Agia Marina, and within a short 25-minute ride, we found ourselves at the Chania bus station.
We took a leisurely stroll towards the Firka Venetian Fortress, which was just 15-minute walk away. From this viewing point, we could see the iconic Chania Lighthouse standing proudly against the backdrop of the sparkling sea.

Walk from Sabbionara Bastion to the Beach
After spending some time wandering through the charming streets of Chania Old Town, nothing quite compares to the refreshing experience of a swim in the sea. Sabbionara Bastion is conveniently located just east of the Old Port. This historic site not only offers a glimpse into the past but also serves as a gateway to a lovely little beach that lies just beyond the city walls.
The Sabbionara Bastion itself is a fascinating landmark, originally constructed in 1536 as part of the Venetian fortifications. It was built to protect against the advancing Ottoman forces that were eyeing Crete. Although the gate was destroyed during the Ottoman invasion in 1645, it was later rebuilt. Today, it remains the only one of Chania’s three Venetian gates that has survived.

Strolling through the charming narrow streets of Chania Old Town was one of the best things to do in Crete. We stumbled upon countless picturesque spots that seemed tailor-made for Instagram. One of our favorite finds was a lovely yellow building tucked away on a quiet street near the Eva Plus Guest House.
Just a stone’s throw away, we discovered a striking red-painted elevation adorned with turquoise doors and windows. The contrast of colors was mesmerizing, and we couldn’t resist snapping a few more pictures. If you’re planning to spend a few days in Chania, I highly recommend considering nearby accommodations like Veneri Boutique Suites or AZADE Chania.

Search for Unique Shops – Things to do in Chania
When we first stumbled upon the Temple Gift Shop in Chania, we were genuinely amazed by this hidden gem. The history of the place captivated me right away; it dates back to 1615 AD when it was originally dedicated to Saint John Theologos. It is fascinating to think about how this location has transformed over time, from a sacred space to a mansion between 1924 and 2004, and now into a charming gift shop that showcases its rich heritage.
Between 2018 and 2019, significant restoration efforts took place, which included extensive excavations on the building’s floor. These excavations uncovered a remarkable discovery: a collection of seventeen cist graves, all of which were traced back to the Venetian period.
Chania is a treasure trove of distinctive shops waiting to be discovered, and the next standout destination is the Diapiro Handmade Jewellery Workshop. Nestled conveniently next to the Favela Living Space, this workshop is situated in a vibrant part of Chania Old Town.
The charm of this hidden gem lies in the courtyard surrounding the Diapiro Handmade Jewellery Workshop. As you wander through this area, you’ll find beautiful jewelry displayed in elegantly designed drop-shaped cabinets. Moreover, the lush greenery that envelops the courtyard adds a touch of nature, creating a serene and picturesque setting that invites you to linger a little longer.

Greece is renowned for its stunning landscapes and vibrant flora, particularly the enchanting Bougainvillea flowers that grace many areas throughout the country. While Rethymno is often celebrated for its abundance of these striking pink blooms, Chania is also worth exploring.
Imagine stepping into a serene oasis where the vibrant pink flowers create a stunning canopy between the Xenon Apartments and the Ela restaurant. This enchanting setting is perfect for those seeking a peaceful dining experience surrounded by natural beauty.

When exploring the charming city of Chania, one cannot overlook the stunning array of churches that Greece is renowned for. A must-visit is the Virgin Mary Holy Metropolitan Church, a remarkable structure that dates back to the late Ottoman period, specifically between 1850 and 1860.
Another captivating site to include in your Chania itinerary is the Kucuk Hasan Mosque, which is situated in the picturesque Old Venetian Port. The vibrant colors of the surrounding buildings in the old town and the sparkling sea create a stunning backdrop.

Try the Best Seafood
Chania, a city rich in history, showcases its Venetian heritage through the remnants of the past, particularly during the period of Venetian rule from 1204 to 1669. The Venetians recognized the strategic importance of Crete and established several Neoria, or arsenals, in Chania to ensure their naval fleet could be maintained and repaired during the winter months.
Today, visitors to Chania can marvel at the well-preserved remains of these Neoria, where a series of seven interconnected domes stand as a testament to the city’s storied past. These domes not only serve as a historical landmark but also provide a picturesque backdrop for the vibrant life that surrounds them.
One of the highlights near these historical domes is Taverna Vasiliko. It offers an inviting atmosphere and a menu with fresh, local seafood dishes. Dining at Vasiliko allows guests to indulge in the culinary traditions of the region while soaking in the stunning views of the harbor.

When I found myself in Chania, I quickly realized that dining in the old town might come with a slightly higher price tag compared to other areas, but I was more than willing to spend a few extra euros for the delightful food and stunning surroundings. One restaurant that caught my eye was Amphora Taverna, which boasts an impressive reputation as a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice winner.
While the menu featured a variety of traditional Greek dishes, I felt a strong pull towards the mushroom risotto, a dish I had been eager to try during my stay in Crete. Unfortunately, I had missed the chance to order it at Valentino Pasta & Grill in our hotel, Oscar Suites & Village, since they didn’t serve it during lunch hours.
Knowing this was my last opportunity to savor mushroom risotto in Crete, I eagerly placed my order at Amphora Taverna. The dish exceeded my expectations, and the experience was made even more special as I admired the breathtaking views of the Chania lighthouse while enjoying my meal.
After finishing my delicious meal, we decided to take a leisurely stroll nearby. As we wandered, we stumbled upon a charming cat lounging by the water, perfectly framed by the picturesque backdrop of Chania Old Town.
Things to Do In Chania – TOP 5 Day Trip Ideas
One of my favorite aspects of planning a day trip from Chania is the variety of experiences available. You can easily head to the stunning Elafonissi Beach, known for its pink sands and crystal-clear waters, or you might choose to visit the ancient ruins of Aptera. No matter what you choose, I know that a day trip from Chania will always be an adventure worth taking. Below are our favourite recommendations of places to visit from Chania.
DAY 1 – Balos & Falasarna Beach
When planning your day trip from Chania, you simply cannot miss the breathtaking beauty of Balos and Falasarna Beach. You will find various tours available that take you from Chania to Balos & Gramvousa or Balos & Falasarna, but if you’re looking for a more flexible and cost-effective option, consider renting a car. This is especially true if you’re traveling with friends; sharing the cost makes it affordable and fun!
Keep in mind that to reach the parking area for Balos, you’ll need a 4×4 vehicle due to the rugged terrain. Once you arrive, a short hike will lead you to the stunning Balos Viewpoint, where you’ll be treated to panoramic views that are absolutely Instagram-worthy. After soaking in the scenery, make your way down to Balos Beach itself. The shallow waters here are perfect for relaxing.
However, if you’re seeking more swimming opportunities, I highly recommend heading over to nearby Falassarna Beach afterward. It’s one of my favorite spots in western Crete! With its beautiful setting, ample sandy shores, and huge waves, Falassarna offers an ideal complement to your day at Balos. Trust me; this combination of beaches will leave you with unforgettable memories of Crete’s natural beauty!
DAY 2 – Elafonisi and Kedrodasos Beach
When planning your day trip from Chania, you simply cannot miss the opportunity to visit Elafonisi and Kedrodasos Beach. Elafonisi is famous for its pink sand beach that draws visitors from around the globe. However, upon arrival, you might notice that the pink hues are not as pronounced as you might expect. Nonetheless, this breathtaking location boasts shallow waters and picturesque rock formations scattered throughout the sea, making it a beautiful spot to relax and soak up the sun.
If you’re an avid swimmer or simply seek a more tranquil experience away from the crowds, make sure to venture to nearby Kedrodasos Beach. This hidden gem is cherished by locals and offers a serene atmosphere that contrasts with the busier Elafonisi. To reach Kedrodasos Beach, you’ll need to rent a car since the group tours do not include this secluded paradise in their itineraries.
Kedrodasos is worth every bit of effort; its pristine sands and crystal-clear waters will leave you enchanted. So pack your travel essentials, grab your sense of adventure, and explore these two incredible beaches during your stay in Chania – each offering unique experiences that showcase the natural beauty of Western Crete!
DAY 3 – Seitan Limania
If you are looking for a half-day trip idea from Chania, make sure to visit Seitan Limania Beach. It is just a short 40-minute drive from Chania Old Town. Upon arrival at the car park, prepare for a scenic hike down to the beach that will leave you in awe of the stunning landscapes.
One of the most charming aspects of Seitan Limania is its resident goats, who eagerly await tourists at the car park. These playful creatures are part of what makes this destination so unique and memorable. However, be warned: I would not recommend bringing any food with you! The goats are notorious for their determination to snag a snack and will go to great lengths to get it from unsuspecting visitors.
To ensure your belongings stay safe while enjoying this beautiful spot, bring along a well-sealed travel backpack. Once you reach the beach, you’ll find that these curious goats have quite an interest in rummaging through bags left unattended.
DAY 4 – Preveli Palm Forest & Kourtaliotiko
When planning your day trip from Chania, look no further than the stunning Preveli Palm Forest and the breathtaking Kourtaliotiko Gorge. Located just a 1 hour and 30-minute drive from Chania, Preveli Palm Forest is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in western Crete. The journey itself is a scenic adventure that sets the stage for an unforgettable experience.
On your way to Preveli Beach, make sure to stop at Kourtaliotiko Gorge. This attraction offers an incredible hiking opportunity where you can witness some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Crete. Just a word of caution: the water at Kourtaliotiko is extremely cold, and reaching the most picturesque part of these waterfalls requires swimming through deep water.
After soaking in the beauty of Kourtaliotiko, it’s only a quick 15-minute drive to Preveli Beach Parking – making it easy to combine these two spectacular sites in your itinerary. However, do keep in mind that getting down to Preveli Beach involves navigating quite a few steps; but trust me, it’s worth every effort!
Once you arrive at this idyllic beach, you can indulge in a refreshing swim or take some time to explore the enchanting Preveli Palm Forest. Incorporating both Kourtaliotiko and Preveli into your day trip not only maximizes your adventure but also allows you to experience two distinct natural wonders of Crete.
DAY 5 – Cave Lera & Gold Coast Beach
If you’re looking for a day trip from Chania without the hassle of renting a car, Gold Coast Beach and Cave Lera should be at the top of your list. A quick bus ride from Chania to Stavros will have you there in approximately 40 minutes, making it an accessible getaway for anyone.
Once you arrive, I highly recommend starting your adventure with a hike to Cave Lera. The trek took us about an hour. However, we took our time as it was hard not to stop and take some photos along the way. The descent is much quicker; we made it back down in about half an hour, eager to hit the beach. Just a word of caution: inside the cave, we encountered quite a few insects, so be prepared.
The views from atop are simply breathtaking and offer a refreshing contrast to more popular spots like Balos. In fact, Gold Coast Beach tends to fly under the radar due to its lower ratings – likely because there aren’t many facilities nearby. The closest market is about a 10-minute walk away, so make sure to pack a water bottle before you set out; you’ll want hydration ready as soon as you arrive at Stavros.
After your hike and exploration of the cave, treat yourself at Dimare Stavros Pool Bar located right across from the beach. It’s the perfect spot to unwind with delicious food and cold drinks while soaking up the sun. Don’t miss out on this hidden gem during your time in Chania!
