Never touch or take out starfish from the water to take photos. On the Isla Contoy, starfishes are literally by the shore. They are covered partially in the sand, and the waves of water touch them all the time. If you want to take an interesting shot, just sit next to them. Please respect these wonderful creatures, while waiting for the right moment to take a picture.

Isla Contoy is a national park, so you won’t find hotels there. We recommend accommodation at the Planet Hollywood Cancun. It is located near the port of Cancun from where all trips go to Isla Contoy.

Tourists traveling from Tulum must spend almost 2 hours on the bus before they reach Cancun. Most of the tours start from the port of Cancun around 8-9 in the morning. If you don’t like getting up in the early morning, hotels around Cancun are the best choice.

This is a small (8.5km long) and at the same time a beautiful island. It is near the city of Cancun and Isla Mujeres (about 30km from Isla Contoy). Due to the National Park since 1998 and the area of environmental protection since 1961, the maximum number of tourists who can visit the island during the day is only 200 people. You can only get there by buying a tour with a travel agency. However, this is one of the best things to do in the Yucatan Peninsula.

However, the most interesting attraction of the island is the starfish. The beach on Isla Contoy is not as crowded as in Isla Mujeres. Nevertheless, most of the tours include a combo cruise on Isla Contoy and Isla Mujeres. It’s worth buying them to see the two paradise islands in Mexico.

🏝 Get 30 meters under the water during a Submarine Expedition in Cozumel

In addition to snorkeling, you can also visit the coastal city with the beautiful Coral Reefs Monument and take a photo next to the big sign Cozumel.

🚲 Explore Cozumel with a bicycle or scooter

The most popular way of transport on the island are bicycles, motorbikes, quads, and golf carts. You will not have a problem with renting them in San Miguel de Cozumel, but the most beautiful places are the easiest to get to by boat with a travel company. The beach located 2.5 hours from Tulum or over 3 hours from Playa del Carmen is most often visited by backpackers.

It takes 4 hours of driving to get to Mahahual from Cancun, so a trip to this beach is not a typical tourist attraction in Mexico. However, those who reach it can enjoy the real treasure of the Caribbean Sea.

Costa Maya is a small sleepy village. You will find there all shades of blue on the crystal clear coast, swings, and hammocks on the water. In addition, you can also rent there a bicycle and enjoy the beautiful views of the non-touristy town. Sounds a bit like a Holbox, doesn’t it?

👉 Check the ruins of Chacchoben near the Mahahual beach

This remote beach in Quintana Roo offers beautiful views of the fishing village, as well as great amenities for such a small town. You can try authentic Mexican food there or spend the night in an inexpensive hotel by the beach. One of the cheapest accommodation options is camping at Camping lunas bar with a beautiful view of the Caribbean Sea.

🌮 Where to eat near Playa Centro, Isla Mujeres?
If you want to try fish tacos, go to the Mexican restaurant – Al Natural. It is located only 5 minutes walk from Playa Centro in Isla Mujeres.

In turn, in Morgan’s Restaurante & Margaritas Bar, you can enjoy delicious drinks and listen to great music. In the restaurant, they also serve delicious seafood or cactus (we do not like it, but you have to try it when visiting Mexico).

The sandy beach, which is full of tourists, after all, deserves to be called one of the most beautiful beaches in the Yucatan Peninsula. Turquoise water and beach bars, where the golden sand is also in restaurants under your feet cannot be missed during a visit to Isla Mujeres. You will also find there swings and hammocks on the water that all tourists love.

In addition, its convenient location makes it an ideal base for visiting the island. One of the best hotels at Playa Centro is Hotel Privilege Aluxes, which is only for adults. Although you will also find there many budget options such as Itzé Hostel – a charming building covered with thatch just 5 minutes from the beach.

From Playa Centro, you can easily get to such attractions as Estatua de la Mujer Desnuda (Mermaid sculpture in shell). You can also go shopping for souvenirs and admire the colorful street art of Isla Mujeres. Playa Centro is a lively beach, to which you can easily get from the town of Cancun.

Which is better Costa Mujeres or Cancun?
Hotels by the beach in Costa Mujeres are usually larger and newer than those at Cancun Hotel Zone. Some of them were built a few years ago. In addition, there are still a lot of undeveloped areas, where new hotels are constantly being constructed. The smaller number of buildings makes the beaches of Costa Mujeres nearly empty.

However, access by taxi to the center of Cancun from Costa Mujeres is quite expensive. Unless you don’t mind using Colectivo with hotel service that is just about to finish their shift. Cancun Hotel Zone is better for those who, in addition to sunbathing, also want to discover nightlife in Cancun.

A short distance from the popular Cancun Hotel Zone also known as a Zona Hotelera, you will find paradise sandy beaches in Costa Mujeres.

In less than 30 minutes you will get there from the center of Cancun with the cheapest way of transport in Mexico – Collectivo R1. If you want to spend a few days in a luxurious hotel in Costa Mujeres, choose Planet Hollywood Cancun, An Autograph Collection All-Inclusive Resort.

Despite the main tourist problem in Mexico – a huge amount of seaweed on the sandy coast, it is still worth going to one of the beaches in the Yucatan Peninsula. Unfortunately, we cannot predict when the seaweed invasion will occur. Also, when it will prevent us from swimming in the blue waters of Mexico.

We know one thing Mexicans are constantly working hard to remove them. Especially in popular tourist resorts such as Playa del Carmen.

🏝 Check out available dates in our favorite hotel Grand Riviera Princess, which is located along the sandy beach, stretching to Playa Xcalacoco and even further!

Playa Xcalacoco is only 15 minutes drive by car from one of the fastest-growing towns in Mexico. At the beach itself, there are many luxury hotels such as:

A beach that has everything. From the rocky coast, coral reef, and Mayan ruins to golden sand with sunbeds and beach umbrellas. What more could you want?

Maybe I will add that this place offers a luxurious stay in one of the largest hotels in Rivier Maya. The Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort & Spa is a 4-star hotel with several swimming pools and many attractions. Consequently, the beach is not very busy during the day.

📩 Type the name of the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort & Spa on Snaptravel to get the best offer on Messenger or WhatsApp.

When most hotel guests enjoy drinks in the swimming pools, you have the opportunity to snorkel on one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico. The advantage of all-Inclusive hotels on the Yucatan Peninsula is that even if you are on the beach, hotel service will take care of your drinks. When you get hungry, you can try a barbeque prepared by a chef on the beach.

During a walk along the coast towards Akumal, you will see beautiful green palm trees with hammocks, which only a few people probably know about. It is an ideal place to take pictures with a drone without a crowd of tourists or hotel guests. In addition, Iguanas at the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort & Spa are just a few other attractions that the hotel has to offer.

Things To Do In Yucatan Peninsula – Visit The Best Cities In Mexico

24. Izamal, Yucatan

Izamal
Izamal, Yucatan Peninsula ©Tanja Cotoaga, Unsplash
🚐 What are the best one-day trips from Izamal?
Izamal is only 1 hour from Chichen Itza (in Mexico one hour is not much, because the country is huge). The capital of culture Merida is even closer (50 minutes by car).

In turn, the Reserva Estatal Geohidrológica Anillo de Cenotes near the city of Izamal is a great concentration of Cenotes. From Cenote Wolpoch, Cenote wolpoch, Cenote Caliskutz Homún (Pavo de monte) to Cenote Paraíso Papaka it is a paradise for cave and crystal clear water lovers.

The city located between Merida and Valladolid was a significant place in the Mayan culture. The name of the city means Dew that falls from the heavens, and the huge buildings in Izamal reflect the power of this place. Undoubtedly, it was a very important political and religious area.

Izamal was abandoned at the end of the 15th century, and its population currently does not exceed 20,000 inhabitants. Despite this, Izamal is famous for its yellow buildings and is on the Pueblos Magicos list, i.e. magical towns in Mexico. This list aims to support the tourism of smaller towns that are extremely beautiful and culturally rich.

🚗💨 Are you planning to visit Izamal on your own and swim in a beautiful cenote? Check out our favorite car rental comparison website - Discovercars

However, Izamal was not always a yellow city. The buildings in the town were painted in this color only after the visit of John Paul II in 1993. The Pope expressed the support of Mexico and was honored not only by the monument at Convento de San Antonio de Padua but also by the whole city painted yellow. This color referred to the Vatican, and Izamal became a popular tourist destination.

The history of Izamal dates back to the Mayan times, and the city itself was built on the ruins of their buildings. Pre-Columbian buildings that are still visible in Izamal are Pirámide Kinich Kakmó with a height of 34 meters, which qualifies it as the third-highest pyramid in Yucatan. It is also known as a Great pyramid for the sun god Maya.

25. Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo

Puerto Morelos

❓ Is it safe to visit Puerto Morelos?
Traveling around the Yucatan Peninsula is generally safe, but you always have to be careful. In Puerto Morelos, you will not be afraid walking on the streets, but watch out for pickpockets. Puerto Morelos is no exception because you can come across them wherever tourists are.

Traveling around the Yucatan Peninsula, even using the cheapest way of transport and visiting non-touristy areas we never felt unsafe. It was only during our departure from Mexico that our valuable things were stolen at the airport. It means that it is most dangerous where we feel safe. Always buy travel insurance that will allow you to recover the costs of losses.

It is only 40-minute drive from Cancun or Playa del Carmen to the quiet seaside town of Puerto Morelos. Boutique hotels by the beach are ideal for those who do not like all-inclusive options. Layla Guesthouse is a nice place with a swimming pool and a view of the Caribbean sea.

💃 Do you love to dance? Take Bachata or Salsa lessons with a local experienced dancer in Puerto Morelos

Turquoise water and the long sandy beach in Puerto Morelos are ideal for snorkeling or diving. The coral reef full of different fish species will impress everyone. In addition, it is not very deep, which makes Puerto Morelos a great place to visit with kids.

Another attraction in Puerto Morelos is also the lighthouse El Faro Inclinado. Moreover, this place is rich in wild nature and you can admire many species of sea birds. However, a visit to Puerto Morelos cannot be complete without tasting Mexican cuisine. This fishing town has many authentic restaurants, and trying fresh seafood is one of the best things to do on the Yucatan Peninsula.

26. Cancun, Quintana Roo

Cancun
Cancun, Yucatan Peninsula ©Ukeveryday

The most famous city in the Yucatan Peninsula in the Mayan language means “Snake Nest”. According to some, it is strongly overrated, and luxurious American-style hotels do not reflect the authenticity of this place. However, if you go outside the hotel zone, you can see real-life in Mexico. Visiting the city on your own is easy due to the very well-developed public transport.

🚗💨 Rent a car with Discovercars directly at the Cancun airport

When visiting Cancun, it is worth learning a few phrases in Spanish. Apart from tourist areas, most of the residents do not know English. Av Tulum is a famous street from which you will get to the Parque de las Palapas. The small stage in the park is painted with street art, and there are also many market stalls around.

If you want to take a picture of big Cancun sign, go to Parque “El Crucero” or Plaza de La Reforma. However, the Cancun shoreline with golden sand and turquoise water makes the greatest impression. Therefore, relax on one of the beaches such as Playa Delfines or Playa Gaviota Azul.

💲 How much should you tip in Mexico?
From our experience, tourists in Cancun usually tip more than in other parts of the Yucatan Peninsula. After all, Cancun is the most luxurious tourist destination in Mexico.

Getting to the point, tips are an individual choice, but there are some rules that you should know before your holiday. The hotel maid, bellboy, or waiter that serves us during breakfast, should get a tip of about $ 1-3. Unless we were very satisfied with the service, then, of course, we can leave more.

When going to the A’la Carte restaurant, people usually tip about $ 10, and if the dinner was delicious, you can tip $ 15.

Do not forget about tour guides and drivers who bring us from the airport and take on tours. Often, at the end of the tour, tips are collected, which are divided between all employees. Some people suggest that you should leave a tip of $ 1-3 for a driver, and $ 5-10 for a tour guide.

After all, during vacation, you will find out how much should you tip, so do not stick to these rules 100%.

🌮 Where to eat in the city of Merida?
If you are a fan of the Taco Chronicle series, you must visit Manjar Blanco. This film location offers tasty Mexican food, and trying Cochinita Pibil is one of the best things to do in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Merida is known as the capital of culture. The town located almost 4 hours from Cancun is saturated with an authentic Mayan culture. There are many historic ruins around Merida, and the city itself has a huge collection of artifacts. The modern Mayan World Museum of Merida is a beautiful exhibition showing the history of the Mayans.

Monumento a la Patria is a monument that you can’t miss in the city of Merida. The huge building with over 300 carved characters is located right next to the northern part of the Zona Paseo Montejo. The number of details and the artistic abilities of the Mayan culture are delightful. In addition, you will also find there a big sign of Merida, which will allow you to take a beautiful picture of an amazing structure with a big sign of the city.

The city with the fastest-growing population in Mexico comes alive at night, and during the day it is full of tourists and digital nomads that work remotely in charming cafes.

In the city center, you will find monuments such as the church of San Servacio e Gervasio. In addition, Valladolid has a Cenote Zaci, which is worth seeing after exploring the historic city. 32. Riviera Maya, Quintana Roo

Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort & Spa

❓ What is the difference between Cancun and Riviera Maya?

Cancun is the most popular town in Mexico with luxury hotels next to long sandy beaches. Riviera Maya offers a holiday in the heart of the jungle by the Caribbean Sea. Vegetation near hotels in Cancun is not as great, and palm trees are planted on sandy beaches for the needs of tourists.
While, Riviera Maya with densely naturally covered vegetation is the home of many species of animals such as iguanas, spider monkeys, aguti, and many others. Hotels perfectly blend into the surrounding landscape.

After exploring various hotels in those two locations we felt a huge difference between what is authentic and what is created by humans. Riviera Maya wins if you want to spend a luxurious vacation in a real jungle.

Yucatan offers a lot of amazing places to admire the second largest coral reef in the world. During a few weeks in Mexico, we had the opportunity to see marine life on the island of Cozumel or the town of Cancun.

However, in terms of snorkeling, Riviera Maya wins. During our transfer from the airport to the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort & Spa, our driver said that in front of this hotel is the most beautiful coral reef on Yucatan Peninsula. I have to admit he was right!

The mix of a sandy beach with a rocky coast offers an ideal place for snorkeling. At a small depth, you can admire the various shapes and colors of the coral reef. This enables closeness with amazing marine life without the need for a diving course, which is required at higher depths.

🌴 Do you dream of a vacation in a real jungle? Check out our favorite hotel in Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort & Spa

Why Riviera Maya is the best place for snorkeling?

Most snorkeling tours in Mexico are in large groups, and the distance from the coral reef is huge, so the satisfaction of this type of attraction is small compared to what you can see opposite the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort & Spa. Next to the hotel, there is another huge all-inclusive hotel only for adults – TRS Yucatan Hotel, which also has great reviews.

During your stay at Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort & Spa, you will see colorful fish, manta rays, and turtles. In addition, there are ruins on the beach, which are the perfect background for taking beautiful photos during the sunset. Riviera Maya is also a great place to stay in Yucatan Peninsula due to its convenient location to many popular attractions such as Cenotes, Cozumel, and Tulum.

❓ Which park is better Xel-Há or Xcaret?
Both amusement parks offer all-day attractions, but Xel-Ha is more affordable. Although the prices of Xel-Ha and Xcaret are very similar, you don’t have to worry about additional costs in the Xel-Ha park, because it is all-inclusive.

Expenses in Xcaret can be much higher if you decide to buy food or drinks. The Xel-Ha park is open from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm, while Xcaret is open from 8:30 am to 10:30 pm. Longer opening hours and more attractions compensate for a higher overall price.

It’s worth seeing the Xel-Ha amusement park which is near Tulum. It is located less than 20 minutes by car from the popular Mayan ruins in Tulum. Many tours offer combo tickets that include visiting both places on the same day. This is certainly a saving option, both money and time, because being on vacation in Mexico you will not be able to see all the attractions. Limited time means that we want to use it the best we can, and Xel-Hel and Tulum are must-see places.

🔥 Explore Xel-ha and 3 other parks during 2-day Combo Tour

The name of this beautiful park in the Mayan language means “Where water is born”. Xel-Ha undoubtedly offers a lot of underwater attractions You can swim there among tropical fishes, turtles and dolphins. Unlike Xcaret, the Xel-Ha park is a natural attraction.

Although the hurricane season begins in June and lasts until November, it arrived earlier at the end of May. During this period, we stayed in Holbox, which was completely flooded and new tourists couldn’t visit the island.

The rainy weather did not stop us from exploring Holbox and we used every free time to enjoy our holiday. Mostly the sky was cloudless in the morning, and in the afternoon it was raining for several hours.

Unfortunately, the light was not good enough to take beautiful photos, especially with a drone.

However, from June to September, it is a peak season to admire whale sharks. Also, turtles lay eggs on the Mexican coast between June and August.

As you can see, the rainy season also has its advantages. However, September is the most rainy month, so we do not recommend a visit at this time.
