Hotels – Cancun vs Tulum

When comparing hotels in Cancun vs Tulum, it’s clear that Cancun boasts a broader selection of larger, high-rise resorts, many of which offer all-inclusive packages. During our visit in Costa Mujeres, we stayed at the Planet Hollywood Cancun Adult Scene.

Hotel Riu Palace Costa Mujeres Cancun vs Tulum
Hotel Riu Palace Costa Mujeres ©UK Every Day

Planet Hollywood Cancun Adult Scene is conveniently located near other luxurious five-star establishments like Hotel Riu Palace Costa Mujeres, Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres, and Hotel Catalonia Grand Costa Mujeres. This concentration of upscale accommodations makes Cancun a prime destination for travelers seeking a vibrant resort experience.

One of the standout features of these expansive resorts is their direct access to stunning beaches, which enhances the overall vacation experience. Guests can indulge in a variety of activities, from lively foam parties at the pool to organized excursions that showcase the beauty of the surrounding area.

For those who thrive in a party atmosphere, Cancun is likely the more appealing option compared to Tulum, which is known for its boutique hotels and a more serene vibe. The lively energy of Cancun caters to those looking to socialize and enjoy a bustling nightlife. One of the most famous nightclub in Cancun is definitely Coco Bongo.

Staying in Cancun can be More Expensive

However, it’s important to note that staying in Cancun can come with a higher price tag. I’ve observed that guests at all-inclusive resorts in Cancun tend to tip more generously than those in Playa del Carmen or the Riviera Maya. While some hotels, like the Hyatt Ziva Cancun, are particularly pricey due to their prime location in the Zona Hotelera, Tulum also has its share of expensive options, especially those that are highly Instagrammable.

Ultimately, both Cancun and Tulum offer a range of accommodations, from budget-friendly to luxurious, with beachfront properties typically commanding higher prices compared to those situated in downtown areas.

Pros of Staying in Cancun Hotels

Best Location For Exploring Islands

Isla Contoy Cancun vs Tulum
Isla Contoy (Cancun vs Tulum) ©UK Every Day

Staying in Cancun offers the significant advantage of being close to stunning islands like Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy. If you choose to base yourself in Tulum, you’ll find that reaching Isla Mujeres requires an early start, as the drive from Tulum to port of Cancun can take nearly two hours.

This added travel time can be a hassle, especially when you’re on vacation and want to enjoy a leisurely morning. Therefore, when deciding between Cancun and Tulum, it’s essential to consider the attractions you wish to explore in the Yucatan Peninsula. After all, no one wants to wake up at the crack of dawn during their holiday just to catch a tour.

During our few trips to Mexico, we booked an Isla Mujeres tour twice, particularly eager to swim with the whale sharks at the start of their season. On our initial visit, we stayed in the Riviera Maya, which is about an hour from Cancun.

This location made our Isla Mujeres excursion much more manageable and enjoyable compared to what it would have been had we been in Tulum. The shorter travel time allowed us to maximize our experience on the island without the fatigue of a long journey.

On our second visit, we opted to stay in Cancun and discovered the breathtaking Isla Contoy. Combining a trip to Isla Mujeres with Isla Contoy turned out to be one of the best decisions we made as travelers.

During both the whale shark tour and combined excursion to Contoy, we had the chance to explore various parts of Isla Mujeres, enriching our experience. Stunning landscapes made every moment unforgettable, so I highly recommend everyone to visit these two islands in Mexico.

Amazing Beachfront Views

One of the standout benefits of choosing to stay in Cancun’s expansive resorts is the breathtaking beachfront views that greet you at every turn. Just a short stroll from your room, you can find yourself on a pristine sandy beach, primarily used by hotel guests.

What truly enhanced my experience at the all-inclusive hotels in Mexico was the attentive service provided by the staff, who would bring refreshing cocktails right to me while I lounged on the beach.

The hotels take great pride in maintaining their beachfront areas, diligently working to clear away seaweed during the peak season, ensuring that guests can enjoy the beautiful beaches.

Convenient Access to Cancun

Additionally, staying in Cancun provides convenient access to the vibrant city itself, which is often the first destination that comes to mind when people think of Mexico. Many travelers overlook the opportunity to venture into Cancun from nearby locations like Tulum or Playa del Carmen, missing out on the unique experiences the city has to offer.

On our second trip to Mexico, we chose to stay at the Planet Hollywood Cancun Adult Scene, which made it easy for us to explore downtown Cancun. We were able to immerse ourselves in the local culture, discovering stunning street art and experiencing the lively atmosphere that defines this iconic city.

Variety of Options Available within the Hotel Zone

Another significant advantage of staying in one of Cancun’s all-inclusive hotels is the variety of options available within the Hotel Zone. Whether you prefer a tranquil adults-only atmosphere, want to have fun with your children in a splash zone, or are eager to participate in a range of daily activities, there is something for everyone. This diversity allows guests to tailor their vacation experience to their preferences, making it easy to find the perfect balance between relaxation and entertainment.

Cons of Staying in Cancun Hotels

Lack of Natural Surroundings

One of the most significant downsides of staying in Cancun is the absence of a lush jungle atmosphere. The area is heavily commercialized, dominated by large resorts that lack the enchanting greenery found in destinations like Riviera Maya and Tulum. These locations are characterized by their rich flora, wildlife, and abundant palm trees, creating a more immersive tropical experience.

During our stay at Motto by Hilton Tulum, we enjoyed the unique opportunity to appreciate the jungle from the rooftop pool, which provided a refreshing contrast to the typical Cancun experience. Walking through the streets of Tulum, we were surrounded by palm trees and a vibrant natural setting, highlighting the charm that Cancun often lacks. This experience underscored the importance of choosing accommodations that offer a more authentic connection to nature.

Limited Greenery in Hotels

Many hotels in Cancun could benefit from incorporating more natural elements into their designs. For instance, the Hotel Grand Riviera Princess in Playa del Carmen exemplifies how greenery can enhance the overall ambiance, making guests feel more connected to the surrounding environment. In contrast, Cancun hotels often feel more sterile and less inviting due to their lack of vegetation.

Missed Culinary Adventures

While all-inclusive resorts in Cancun offer a variety of dining options, they often lack the genuine flavors and experiences of local cuisine. During our initial visits to Mexico, we found ourselves unable to truly appreciate the richness of Mexican food, as our meals were confined to the resort’s offerings.

In contrast, during our stay at Motto by Hilton Tulum, we discovered delightful street food options, including burritos that were not only delicious but also budget-friendly. Exploring areas like Tulum can provide a richer understanding of Mexico’s diverse heritage and lifestyle.

High Taxi Costs

Travelers often find that taxi fares in Cancun can be surprisingly high, particularly in popular areas such as the Hotel Zone and when traveling from the airport. Many taxi drivers tend to charge inflated rates, especially for tourists. To avoid the high costs associated with taxi rides, consider renting a car at Cancun Airport. This option is often quite affordable and provides you with the freedom to explore at your own pace.

Pros of Staying in Tulum Hotels

Best Location For Exploring Cenotes

Cenote Ik Kil

One of the significant advantages of choosing hotels in Tulum is their prime location for discovering the region’s stunning cenotes. Tulum serves as an excellent home base for those eager to immerse themselves in the natural beauty that surrounds it. By staying at Motto by Hilton Tulum, we found ourselves perfectly positioned to embark on numerous day trips without the hassle of long travel times, allowing us to maximize our exploration of the area.

Cenote Suytun

Our primary goal during this trip was to visit some of the best cenotes near Valladolid that we had overlooked in our previous visits to Mexico. Thanks to Tulum’s proximity, we were able to explore several breathtaking cenotes, including Cenote Suytun, Cenotes Dzitnup, and Cenote Ik Kil, all within a single day. This convenience not only made our adventures more enjoyable but also allowed us to experience the unique beauty of each cenote without feeling rushed.

Additionally, Tulum’s strategic location between Cancun Airport and Bacalar made our travel plans much more manageable. After renting a car in Mexico, we aimed to drive down to Tulum, and taking a few days to stay at Motto by Hilton Tulum significantly reduced the fatigue associated with a long drive. This thoughtful stopover allowed us to break up our journey, making the overall experience more pleasant and less exhausting than if we had driven directly from Cancun to Bacalar.

Delicious Food

Liefs Tulum

One of the benefits of staying at Motto by Hilton Tulum was the opportunity to indulge in the flavors of authentic Mexican cuisine, particularly from local street vendor nearby. Moreover, the experience of savoring a burger made with BBQ-marinated pulled Mexican Yaca at Liefs Tulum was truly unforgettable, showcasing the unique culinary offerings of the region. The vibrant food scene in Tulum is a great adventure for any food enthusiast, making it a far more appealing destination than Cancun for those who appreciate diverse and flavorful dishes.

I often find myself wishing for more time in Tulum, as there are so many culinary gems waiting to be discovered. Eager to explore local favorites like Taqueria Honorio, Taqueria La Chiapaneca, and Palma Central, I realized that Tulum is a paradise for food lovers. Each of these spots promises a unique taste of the local culture, and the variety of options available ensures that every meal can be a new and exciting experience.

For those who enjoy healthy options, Matcha Mama stands out as one of the most Instagram-worthy locations in Tulum, offering not only visually stunning smoothie bowls but also delightful flavors that are hard to resist.

During our visit to Liefs Tulum, we sampled some incredible superfood smoothies that left us craving more. The combination of colourful ingredients and creative presentations makes Tulum a haven for anyone looking to enjoy delicious and nutritious meals while soaking in the beautiful surroundings.

Exploring Tulum by Bike

During our first trip to Mexico, we had the pleasure of visiting Holbox Island, where cycling is the preferred mode of transportation. The enchanting atmosphere of Holbox captured my heart, and I struggled to find a comparable destination until we discovered Tulum. This small town not only offers stunning beaches but also a unique charm that resonates with those who appreciate a laid-back lifestyle.

Many hotels in Tulum provide bike rentals, often with discounts for their guests. For example, at Motto by Hilton Tulum, we could rent one of the bikes for free simply for being hotel guests.

If I find myself back in Tulum, I will certainly rent a bike to discover all the picturesque locations that are perfect for Instagram. I can’t wait to visit iconic spots such as Escultura Ven a la Luz and the Soy Tulum Beach Club. Additionally, capturing a photo next to the well-known “Follow that dream” sign is definitely on my to-do list in Tulum.

Unique Hotels

Once more, I will compare Tulum and Isla Holbox, as both destinations boast some truly distinctive accommodations. One standout hotel in Tulum is Azulik, renowned for its remarkable architecture that harmoniously integrates with the natural landscape, creating a serene and immersive experience for guests.

On the other hand, if you’re traveling on a budget, Tulum offers a wealth of fantastic options for backpackers. A prime example is TuboTulum Hostel, which is definitely worth considering. This charming hostel is conveniently located just a short stroll away from the Motto by Hilton Tulum, a four-star hotel where we had the pleasure of staying during our recent trip.

Whether you’re seeking luxury or affordability, Tulum caters to a variety of travelers. The unique blend of high-end resorts and budget-friendly hostels ensures that everyone can find a suitable place to rest after a day of exploring the stunning beaches and vibrant culture that this beautiful destination has to offer.

Cons of Staying in Tulum Hotels

Quiet

Although we typically avoid crowded locations, I was pleasantly surprised by the tranquility of Tulum. The atmosphere here is much more relaxed compared to the hustle and bustle of Cancun. In fact, when I reflect on our earlier trip to Playa del Carmen, I find that Tulum has a quieter vibe, which might not be to everyone’s taste.

Tulum Downtown is Far From the Beach

Consider renting a car at Cancun Airport

One of the disadvantages of choosing hotels in Tulum is the distance from the beaches. If you opt for accommodations in the downtown area rather than the pricier beachfront resorts, accessing the sandy shores can be quite a challenge.

To make your stay more enjoyable and convenient, I suggest renting a car at Cancun Airport. This will give you the freedom to explore Tulum and its beautiful coastline at your own pace. Many hotels, such as Motto by Hilton Tulum, offer free parking facilities for their guests.

Stray Dogs Roaming the Streets

While we love animals, our nighttime strolls through downtown Tulum revealed a significant number of stray dogs roaming the streets. Their unpredictable nature can be concerning, so it’s wise to keep your distance whenever possible. This experience in Tulum reminded us of our recent trip to Krabi in Thailand, where we also chose to avoid late-night walks in some areas due to the presence of stray dogs.

Final Thoughts – Cancun vs Tulum

Atik Tulum Park Cancun vs Tulum

In reflecting on my experiences in Mexico, I find myself drawn to the Yucatan Peninsula, a destination I could happily revisit year after year. Tulum stands out as a top choice for my return, thanks to its relaxed vibe, a wide array of dining options, and its overall accessibility. That said, everyone has unique preferences, and for those who thrive in a lively party atmosphere, Cancun might be the more suitable option.

One of my aspirations is to explore Belize, and the abundance of affordable flights from the UK to Cancun Airport makes this dream feel attainable. Upon landing in Cancun, my plan would be to make my way to Tulum, where I would check in for one night into inexpensive TuboTulum Hostel. This would provide me with a much-needed opportunity to recharge before embarking on the next leg of my adventure toward the Mexican-Belize border.

In conclusion, if you’re still torn between choosing Cancun or Tulum for your next getaway, I suggest taking a look at our article highlighting the top activities in the Yucatan Peninsula.
