Why Should You Consider Los Angeles Car Rental?

Renting a car in Los Angeles may seem like a costly option compared to other destinations around the globe, but it offers unparalleled freedom to explore the city and its surroundings. With a rental vehicle, you can venture beyond the typical tourist spots included in standard holiday packages, allowing you to discover a wealth of attractions at your own pace.

Organized tours can quickly add up in expenses, making a rental car a more economical choice for those eager to experience the diverse offerings of the area. For instance, using platforms like Discovercars, we were able to uncover hidden gems such as Kanarra Falls and the quirky town of Oatman, which are often overlooked by conventional itineraries.

Our road trip through California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona stands out as one of the most memorable experiences of our lives. The journey showcased an incredible variety of landscapes, transitioning from arid deserts to breathtaking national parks like the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, and Bryce Canyon.

Each stop along the way revealed stunning vistas and unique geological formations, while state parks such as the Valley of Fire added to the adventure with their vibrant colors and striking rock formations. The ability to drive through these diverse environments made the trip not just a vacation, but a true exploration of nature’s wonders.

We also made our way to iconic destinations like Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon, which are located over 8 hours from Los Angeles Airport. By planning our route with multiple stops at different hotels, we were able to recharge and take in various local attractions along the way.

This approach not only broke up the long drive but also enriched our journey with unexpected discoveries. In my view, there is no better way to experience the stunning landscapes of the United States than by renting a car, as it allows for a personalized adventure filled with spontaneity and exploration.

How to Choose the Right Car Rental Service?

Choosing the right car rental service in Los Angeles can be a daunting task, given the plethora of options available. The city is home to a variety of well-known rental companies, including Enterprise, Hertz, Avis, SIXT, and Budget. However, among the many choices, Alamo stands out as a top contender, consistently receiving excellent reviews from customers.

Choosing the right car rental service can significantly enhance your travel experience, so it’s essential to do your homework. Start by comparing prices from various rental companies through platforms like Discovercars or Rentalcars.

These websites allow you to see a range of options and prices, making it easier to find a deal that fits your budget. Additionally, take the time to read customer reviews, as they can provide valuable insights into the quality of service and the condition of the vehicles. Aim for rentals that have ratings ranging from average to exceptional, as this can help ensure a satisfactory experience.

After our previous positive experience renting a car through Discovercars, we decided to return to the site for our car rental comparison in Los Angeles. To secure a better deal, we made our reservation online a few months ahead of our trip.

This approach was a valuable lesson learned from our recent car rental in Montenegro, where we discovered that waiting until the last minute not only drove up the rental prices but also limited our options for available vehicles. By planning ahead, we were able to avoid those pitfalls and ensure a smoother rental process.

This time, we chose Alamo Rent a Car for our rental needs, and I must say, it quickly became one of our preferred companies. Alamo has garnered outstanding reviews on Discovercars, Rentalcars and Google, so my recommendation to select them for Los Angeles trip should come as no surprise.

The most delightful surprise came when the Alamo staff informed us that we could choose any SUV parked in their designated area. With the keys left inside the vehicles, we had the freedom to select a different car than the one we had originally booked online. However, we ultimately opted for the Hyundai Kona we had chosen during the booking process.

Picking Up Your Rental Car (Los Angeles Car Rental)

After you have successfully navigated through security at Los Angeles Airport, your next step is to make your way to the airport exit. As you step outside, you see a variety of bus stops that provide shuttle services to numerous rental car companies, including Alamo Rent A Car. The signage is clear, making it easy to identify the right shuttle for your needs.

The shuttle ride to Alamo Rent A Car is typically a quick journey, taking approximately 15 minutes from the airport. Moreover, the shuttles are frequent, so you won’t have to wait long before you’re on your way.

Do You Need 4×4 (Four-Wheel Drive Car)?

When we set out to create a two-week itinerary for our trip across the USA, we made a conscious decision to avoid driving on rugged terrain and to focus on attractions that didn’t require the rental of a four-wheel drive vehicle.

However, our desire to visit the iconic Monument Valley led us to consider renting an SUV, as it was highly recommended for navigating the area. Upon our arrival at Monument Valley, we quickly realized that while a four-wheel drive vehicle might have been advantageous, our Hyundai Kona SUV was more than capable of handling the terrain.

In hindsight, we felt that it wasn’t justifiable to spend extra money on a 4×4 vehicle that we would only need for a single day. For anyone planning a visit to Monument Valley, I believe that renting an SUV is the bare minimum to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

If you’re looking to save on car rental costs, it’s wise to steer clear of renting a four-wheel drive vehicle unless absolutely necessary. The United States is home to countless breathtaking attractions that can be easily accessed with a compact car.

However, if you anticipate needing more space for your road trip – whether for luggage, passengers, or simply for comfort – an SUV, like the one we chose, is a fantastic option that strikes a balance between practicality and affordability.

How Bad is Driving in Los Angeles?

Driving in California

Driving in Los Angeles can be quite a daunting experience, particularly for those who are not accustomed to navigating its complex freeway system. The city is notorious for its confusing merges and exits, which can easily disorient even good drivers.

During our recent trip, as we were leaving Los Angeles to head to Las Vegas, we decided to stop for a meal at the famous In-N-Out Burger. However, finding the right exit proved to be a challenge, and it took us several attempts before we finally managed to get off at the correct spot. With our time constraints, each wrong turn felt like a setback, adding unnecessary delays to our journey.

Despite the challenges of exiting the city, we found that driving to popular attractions like Rodeo Drive and the Hollywood sign was relatively straightforward. The roads leading to these famous landmarks were easier to navigate. It was only the departure from Los Angeles that felt like a bit of a nightmare, as we wrestled with the maze of highways and interchanges that characterize the area.

On a positive note, we were relieved to have picked up our rental car from Alamo Rent A Car, conveniently located just 15 minutes from LAX Airport. This proximity made our transition from the airport to the Best Western Plus Commerce Hotel much smoother and less stressful. After a long day of travel, it was a relief to know that we could quickly get to our accommodation and settle in for the night, ready to continue our adventure the following day.

If you’re considering parking closer to the Rodeo Drive photo area, be prepared for a significant increase in parking costs. The proximity to such a popular destination naturally drives up prices, which can be a shock for those unfamiliar with the area.

You can save money and enjoy a leisurely walk to the heart of Beverly Hills, by opting for the Parking Garage we found (9333 W 3rd St, Beverly Hills, CA 90210, United States). It is conveniently situated just a 15-minute stroll from the iconic Rodeo Drive, making it an excellent choice for those looking to explore the area without the hassle of high parking fees.

Hollywood Sign

Parking in Los Angeles can be tricky, especially for newcomers. Before our visit, I learned that we could park for free at Canyon Lake Drive and access the Innsdale Trailhead to hike to the Hollywood Sign. Unfortunately, we weren’t well-versed in the city’s parking regulations, which led to us receiving a fine for parking against the flow of traffic on a two-way street – something we could have easily avoided with a bit of prior knowledge.

In California, it’s important to remember that vehicles must be parked parallel to the curb and facing the same direction as the traffic. This rule is crucial to avoid fines, as parking the wrong way is not permitted.

Additionally, parking next to red curbs is strictly prohibited, so it’s essential to pay attention to the signage in the area. In our case, there were no signs indicating that parking against the flow was not allowed, but that didn’t prevent us from receiving a ticket.

For those looking to steer clear of parking violations in Los Angeles, it’s wise to familiarize yourself with local regulations. You can find more information about parking enforcement on the Official Website of the City of Los Angeles. Being informed can save you from unexpected fines and make your visit much more enjoyable.

Gas Prices (Los Angeles Car Rental)

As we journeyed through several states, we observed a notable disparity in gasoline prices between California and Arizona. The border between these two states boasts the largest price gap for fuel in the United States, with an average difference of about $1 per gallon.

During our two-week road trip, we discovered the most affordable gas in Page, which served as an excellent base for exploring the natural wonders of the USA. We spent three nights at the Super 8 by Wyndham Page/Lake Powell and quickly fell in love with the location.

Gas prices were highest in larger cities like Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Nevertheless, it’s important to remember that gasoline in America remains relatively inexpensive compared to many other regions around the world.

Dealing with Car Issues (Los Angeles Car Rental)

During our previous car rental experiences, we were fortunate not to encounter any mechanical issues. However, as we were concluding our road trip and driving from Palm Springs to the Los Angeles Airport, we received an alert on our dashboard indicating low tire pressure. This notification was a bit concerning, especially since we were still two hours away from our destination. To ensure our safety and avoid any potential problems, we decided it was best to investigate the situation further.

After checking out from the Best Western Plus Las Brisas Hotel, we made a quick stop at a nearby Shell Station that had a service center. The staff there were incredibly helpful; they promptly checked the tire pressure on all four tires and discovered that one of them might have a nail embedded in it. Fortunately, they were able to fix the issue on the spot, and we only had to pay $30 for the service. This quick resolution allowed us to continue our journey with minimal disruption.

Thankfully, our travel plans were not significantly delayed, and we had the foresight to leave the Best Western Plus Las Brisas Hotel a bit earlier than necessary. I highly recommend this approach for anyone heading to the airport, as it provides a buffer in case of unexpected car troubles. Staying close to the airport the night before your flight can alleviate a lot of stress, ensuring that if any issues arise, you won’t be in a panic about missing your flight.

Best Places to Visit (Los Angeles Car Rental)

Valley of Fire

We dedicated a day to immerse ourselves in the vibrant culture and attractions of Los Angeles before heading to Las Vegas for three days. Las Vegas served as an excellent base for our adventures, allowing us to easily access the breathtaking landscapes of Death Valley and the stunning formations of Valley of Fire. Each destination offered a unique experience, from the glitz of the Strip to the natural wonders just a short drive away.

After our time in Las Vegas, we made our way toward the majestic Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon. We spent several days in Page, where the beauty of Antelope Canyon and Lake Powell captivated us, followed by a visit to the picturesque town of Sedona, known for its red rock formations.

Palm Springs Los Angeles Car Rental

Our journey continued along the historic Route 66, leading us to the sunny oasis of Palm Springs. If time had permitted, we would have loved to extend our stay in Best Western Plus Las Brisas Hotel to explore the unique landscapes of Joshua Tree National Park.

For those planning a summer road trip, the Pacific Coast Highway offers a scenic route with opportunities to stop at charming coastal towns like Malibu. However, since our trip took place at the end of April and the beginning of May, we opted to focus on the national parks instead of beach destinations.

Renting a car at Los Angeles Airport provides a wealth of options, ensuring that travelers can tailor their adventures to their interests and the season, making it a perfect choice for anyone looking to explore the diverse landscapes of Southern California and beyond.
