During our two-week road trip that took us through California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona, we made a point to see Los Angeles in one day. If you’re looking to make the most of a single day in Los Angeles, consider hiking to the iconic Hollywood Sign. Prior to our visit, I researched some of the best spots for capturing that perfect Hollywood Sign photo, including Lake Hollywood Park, Griffith Observatory, and the picturesque South Windsor Boulevard lined with palm trees. However, with only one day to explore this city, we had to prioritize our itinerary and accept that we wouldn’t be able to see everything on our wish list.
Our adventure began with a scenic drive down South Windsor Boulevard, where we paused to snap some stunning California photos. Renting a car in Los Angeles proved to be a wise decision, as it allowed us the flexibility to tailor our schedule to our preferences.
Explore Beverly Hills
After capturing the beauty of the South Windsor Boulevard, we made our way to Beverly Hills, where we took memorable pictures near the Beverly Hills Fire Department Station 1 and strolled around the Beverly Hills Police Department. We even ventured inside the Beverly Hills City Hall, marveling at its breathtaking architecture and elegant interior.
Continuing our exploration, we headed towards the renowned Rodeo Drive. Although the area was bustling with tourists, making it a bit challenging to take photos in the Rodeo Drive Photo Area, we managed to capture some great moments.
Afterward, we retraced our steps back to the Beverly Hills Police Department, where we had parked our car nearby, and set off for our final destination of the day – the Hollywood Sign. The anticipation of reaching this iconic landmark was the perfect way to conclude our day in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles in One Day Itinerary
Stop 1 – Hollywood Sign Between Palm Trees (Los Angeles in One Day)
If you’re looking for a picturesque spot to capture the iconic Hollywood Sign, I highly suggest taking a drive along South Windsor Boulevard. This street offers a unique vantage point where you can frame the sign beautifully between swaying palm trees, creating a quintessential Los Angeles scene.
The area is predominantly residential, which adds to its serene atmosphere, allowing you to pause and enjoy the view without the hustle and bustle often found in more tourist-heavy locations. During our visit, we spent about ten minutes soaking in the sights and taking pictures, which felt just right before heading off to Beverly Hills.

Stop 2 – Beverly Hills Fire Dept. Station 1 (Los Angeles in One Day)
If you’re looking to maximize your experience in Beverly Hills, a visit to the Beverly Hills Fire Department Station 1 is a must. This historic station offers a unique opportunity to delve into the rich history of the Los Angeles Fire Department, which has been serving the community since its establishment in 1886. As the third-largest municipal fire department in the United States, following only the New York City and Chicago Fire Departments, it plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of the city.

Stop 4 – Beverly Hills City Hall (Los Angeles in One Day)
The Beverly Hills City Hall is a renowned filming site, particularly celebrated for its role in the Beverly Hills Cop series. Its striking exterior serves as a backdrop for the escapades of Axel Foley, making it a memorable location for fans of the films.
One of the building’s standout features is its impressive eight-story tower, which adds to its architectural charm. If you find yourself in the area, take a moment to also explore the interior of Beverly Hills City Hall. It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience the elegance of the space and connect with the history of this iconic landmark.
Stop 5 – Rodeo Dr (Los Angeles in One Day)
After our visit to the Beverly Hills Civic Center, we embarked on a pleasant ten-minute stroll to Rodeo Drive, renowned as a premier destination for luxury shopping in LA. The atmosphere was vibrant, filled with the excitement of tourists capturing memories at the Rodeo Drive Photo Area. As we made our way along the iconic Rodeo Drive Steps, we decided to return to the Civic Center, where we had parked our car just a short distance away.
Walking along Rodeo Drive is an experience not to be missed, as the street is adorned with numerous picturesque spots perfect for photography. The avenue is flanked by an array of high-end boutiques, featuring prestigious brands such as Gucci, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Cartier, and Chanel, among others. Each storefront exudes elegance and charm, inviting passersby to indulge in a little window shopping or simply admire the luxurious displays.
Our exploration of Rodeo Drive lasted approximately 45 minutes, which included our leisurely return to the car park. The combination of stunning architecture, upscale shops, and the lively atmosphere made for a delightful outing. I wholeheartedly recommend taking the time to wander along this famous street, as it offers a unique glimpse into the world of luxury and style that defines Beverly Hills.
Stop 6 – Hike Hollywood Sign (Los Angeles in One Day)
One aspect we underestimated was the time required for our hike to the Hollywood Sign. We began our trek at 2 PM and returned to our car by 4 PM, totaling two hours for the hike. Given that we were also planning to drive to Las Vegas later that day, a four-hour journey, we decided this would be our final stop in Los Angeles.
Apart from sightseeing, food breaks and commuting time are essential to consider when planning a day in LA, as they can significantly impact your schedule. Everything adds up quickly, and attempting to squeeze in too many attractions in a single day can lead to disappointment if you can’t complete your itinerary.
I found the hike to the Hollywood Sign to be one of the highlights of my time in LA. If you want to feel comfortable during the trek, I recommend wearing sturdy hiking shoes and dressing in layers. During our visit in April, the wind at the summit was quite strong, so a windproof jacket would have made the experience even more enjoyable
Along the trail, there are plenty of opportunities to capture stunning photos of the iconic sign, and the blooming wildflowers in spring beautifully contrast with the city skyline. Hike to Hollywood Sign should be on top of everyone’s list when visiting Los Angeles for one day.
Where to Stay in Los Angeles?
If you’re considering a trip to Los Angeles, it’s wise to secure your hotel accommodations well in advance. Even with ample time to plan, you might discover that a significant portion of your preferred hotels are already fully booked.
This was our experience when we arranged our stay a few months prior to our visit. Faced with limited options, we ultimately chose the Best Western Plus Commerce Hotel, which had outstanding breakfast that surpassed all the other hotels we encountered during our road trip across the USA.
That said, if I had a broader selection of hotels to choose from, I would likely have selected the Palihotel Melrose. This charming urban boutique hotel boasts a stunning design and is conveniently located just a short drive away from the glamorous Beverly Hills area. The aesthetic appeal of the Palihotel, combined with its proximity to some of LA’s most iconic attractions, makes it an enticing option for travelers seeking a unique experience in the city.
