Thor’s Cave

Visitors to Peak District can embark on a thrilling adventure as they explore the cavern’s mysterious and awe-inspiring chambers where artefacts from Bronze Age Burial were found. Soaring ceilings and natural crevices create a truly otherworldly atmosphere, captivating all who enter inside the cave. 

There is a small car park near Weag’s Bridge from where you can start your hike to Thor’s Cave. The cave’s name is often mistaken with the Norse god of thunder famous from Marvel’s movie. It is more likely that it comes from the word “tors”, meaning hills.

Shrewsbury

West Midlands was not on our bucket list of places to visit in England for a very long time. However, we decided to explore a few more locations in this region before writing this post, and we were blown away by how wonderful Shrewsbury is.

It reminds us a bit of Chester with its black and white houses, Severn River surrounding the town and many quaint cafes. However, one of the attractions that cannot be missed is Shrewsbury Prison which is a decommissioned Victorian jail since 2013, but became open to the public. It is the only place in England listed along with Auschwitz or Chernobyl as one of the best dark tourism attractions in the world by BBC Radio 4.

Ellesmere is renowned for its tranquil lake the Mere, which is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. Take a leisurely stroll along the scenic lakeside paths, breathe in the fresh air, and immerse yourself in the serenity of this idyllic setting.

In addition to its natural wonders, Ellesmere boasts a rich history that is waiting to be explored. The town is home to several historic buildings, such as the beautiful Grade I listed building – St. Mary’s Church, which dates back to the 14th century. 

North West – Best Places to Visit in England

One of the highlights of the North West is undoubtedly its vibrant cities. Liverpool, birthplace of The Beatles, offers a unique blend of music, art, and maritime history. Also, the famous Albert Dock is home to various museums and galleries that are free to visit in Liverpool.

Beyond the urban allure, the North West also boasts breathtaking natural landscapes that will leave visitors in awe. The Lake District National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a haven for nature lovers.

Formby Beach, in particular, is a must-visit spot, known for its beautiful sand dunes and breathtaking views of the Irish Sea.

But Sefton Coast is not just about its beaches. The area is also home to several nature reserves, making it a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. The Ainsdale Sand Dunes National Nature Reserve is a prime example, boasting a rich variety of flora and fauna. From rare orchids to natterjack toads, you’ll have the opportunity to spot some truly unique species in their natural habitat. Moreover, Ainsdale Beach horse riding offers unforgettable experiences in the North West of England.

The area of Sefton Coast is also dotted with man made landmarks that are worth exploring. One such site is the Crosby Beach, famous for Antony Gormley’s “Another Place” installation. This thought-provoking artwork features 100 life-size iron figures spread across the Crosby Beach, creating a mesmerizing sight.

Alnwick Castle, located in Northumberland, England, is a magnificent medieval fortress that boasts a rich history dating back to the 11th century. However, beyond its historical significance, Alnwick Castle has also gained fame as a popular filming location.

It has served as the backdrop for numerous movies and TV shows, including the famous Harry Potter series. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone or Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets are only a few example of what was filmed at Alnwick Castle.

Durham 

One of the highlights of Durham is its magnificent cathedral, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This architectural masterpiece dates back to the 11th century and boasts intricate details and breathtaking stained glass windows. Ingleton Waterfalls

This stunning series of waterfalls is located in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and offers visitors a chance to experience the beauty of nature up close. The trail leading to the waterfalls is well-maintained and provides stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

Ingleton Waterfalls trail is approximately 4,5 miles and takes between 2 to 4 hours to complete. During this circular walk you will see Pecca Falls, Hollybush Spout, Thornton Force, Beezley Falls, Baxenghyll Gorge and Snow Falls. Where else can you see such a large number of waterfalls in one place in England?

Malham Cove

Malham Cove is a massive curved cliff face that stands at an impressive 70 metre (230ft) feet high. It was formed thousands of years ago by a glacier, leaving behind a breathtaking limestone amphitheater.

Scenes from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows show vistas from the top of Malham Cove, making it a famous location for movie lovers. Hike from the Malham National Park Visitor Centre to Malham Cove takes 25 minutes each way and offers amazing day out in England.

Gordale Scar

If you follow Hawthorns Ln from the top of Malham Cove, you will find one of the best places in Yorkshire – Gordale Scar. Hike from the top of Malham Cove to Gordale Scar takes approximately 50 minutes. The sound of rushing water will fill the air, creating a soothing ambiance that will invite you to explore further.

As you venture deeper into the gorge, you’ll be greeted by a beautiful waterfall. Although, I love waterfalls in Wales so much, the Gordale Scar has put Yorkshire at the very top of my favorite places in the United Kingdom.

Janet’s Foss

Janet’s Foss waterfall is a breathtaking natural wonder nestled in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. This enchanting waterfall is named after Janet, a mythical fairy queen who is said to have lived in the cave near the waterfall.

The crystal-clear water flows gracefully over the rocks, forming small pool where you can dip your toes and cool off on a warm summer’s day. Although even in winter I saw some brave swimmers at Janet’s Foss Falls.

Goit Stock Waterfall

Immerse yourself in the serene atmosphere as you explore the surrounding woodland trails that lead to Goit Stock Waterfall. Unfortunately, there is no swimming allowed at Goit Stock Waterfall. However, exploring this hidden gem in England is the best way to avoid crowds that head to the most famous waterfalls in Yorkshire.

Once you reach the waterfall, take a moment to admire its sheer beauty and power. The water gracefully tumbles down the rocks, creating a symphony of movement and sound. Goit Stock waterfall is 20ft (6m) high and has a very deep pool.

East Midlands – Best Places to Visit in England

One of the best places to visit in the East Midlands is Nottingham. The city is known for its rich history and association with the legendary Robin Hood. Visitors can also explore the famous Sherwood Forest, where the legendary outlaw is said to have roamed.

Reynards Cave

One of the most important discoveries in Dovedale were late Iron Age coins found in Reynards Cave in 2014. During the Neolithic, Roman, and Mediaeval eras, Reynards Cave served as temporary shelter.

Reynards Cave, also known as Reynards Kitchen is without doubt a spectacular natural landmark in the Peak District. If you want to find out more about this historic site, I highly recommend visiting Buxton Museum and Art Gallery. Some of the museum’s expositions include findings from the cave including Roman coins.

Dove Holes

Following River Dove from Dovedale Car Park towards Milldale you will see many natural landmarks. These include the Twelve Apostles, Lion’s Head Rock, Ilam Rock, Tissington Spires or Reynard’s Cave. However, one of the highlights of Dovedale National Nature Reserve are Dove Holes formed by melting glacier waters.

The best time to visit Dovedale National Nature Reserve is in summer. During winter when it rains a lot Dovedale Stepping Stones can be flooded and access to Dove Holes may be limited. This 3-mile walk from Dovedale Car Park to Milldale is recommended when days are longer, because there is so much to see in this beautiful area.

Winnats Pass

Winnats Pass is a breathtaking natural wonder nestled in the heart of the Peak District in England. This stunning limestone gorge is a sight to behold, with its towering cliffs and winding road that cuts through the landscape. As you drive or hike through the pass, you’ll be surrounded by the sheer beauty of the rugged rock formations and lush greenery that make this place truly unique.

If you are nature lover there many interesting caves to visit such as Blue John Cavern, Treak Cliff Cavern, Peak Cavern or Cave Dale. In addition, Peveril Castle will take you back to 11th-century and views from the hill will take your breath away.

Ladybower Reservoir

Ladybower Reservoir is a beautiful body of water located in the Upper Derwent Valley in Derbyshire, England. It was created in the 1940s by the construction of a dam and it is now a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.

This reservoir can hold up to 27,800,000 m3 of water, and it supplies water to many people in the cities such as Sheffield, Derby, or Nottingham. I recommend visiting Ladybower Reservoir after heavy rainfalls to see water flowing into plug holes. If you want to capture this magical moment, the best time to visit is in winter.

One of the must-visit places in the East of England is Cambridge, home to the prestigious University of Cambridge. This city is not only famous for its academic excellence but also for its beautiful architecture, including the iconic King’s College Chapel.

Horsey Gap
