How to get to Niederau from the Airport?

Salzburg Airport to Niederau
To reach Niederau from Salzburg Airport, one can opt for various transportation options. One of the most convenient ways is to take a direct train from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof (main train station) to Wörgl, which is the nearest major town to Niederau.
From Wörgl, regular bus services are available that will take you directly to Niederau. This train and bus combination provides a seamless and scenic journey, allowing travelers to relax and soak in the picturesque Austrian landscapes.
Innsbruck Airport to Niederau
Similarly, if you are arriving at Innsbruck Airport, there are efficient transportation options to reach Niederau. From Innsbruck Airport, you can take a taxi or a bus to Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof (main train station).
From there, you can catch a train to Wörgl, which is the closest train station to Niederau. Once you arrive in Wörgl, you can easily transfer to a bus that will take you directly to Niederau or get private transfer.

It is worth noting that both Salzburg and Innsbruck Airports offer car rental services that you can book online for those who prefer the flexibility and independence of driving. Renting a car provides the opportunity to explore the surrounding areas at your own pace and convenience.
From Salzburg Airport, you can follow the A1 and A12 highways, which will lead you to Wörgl. From there, you can easily navigate to Niederau.
Similarly, from Innsbruck Airport, you can take the A12 highway towards Wörgl and then proceed to Niederau. Driving allows you to enjoy the scenic routes and make stops along the way to admire the breathtaking landscapes of the Austrian Alps.
How to Get to Niederau from Munich, Germany?
To travel by car from Munich to Niederau, there are several routes you can consider. One of the most common routes is to take the A8 highway towards Salzburg. Then, follow A93 highway towards Kufstein. This route is approximately 112 kilometers long and takes around 1 hour 20 minutes to complete, depending on traffic conditions.
If you prefer a more scenic route, you can consider a bit longer journey that will take you through the beautiful Bavarian countryside, passing through towns like Bad Tölz and Bayrischzell.
The B307 road offers stunning views of the Alps and is a popular choice for those who want to enjoy the picturesque landscapes of the region. The distance for this route is approximately 160 kilometers, and the travel time is around 2.5 hours, depending on traffic and the speed at which you choose to drive.

As we embarked on our voyage to Salzburg, little did we know that Mother Nature had a different plan in store for us. Our flight, originally bound for Salzburg, was unexpectedly redirected to Munich due to the relentless power of the wind.
While it may have initially seemed like an inconvenience, it gave us some ideas that we can pass for other travelers. You can experience the seamless transition from the cosmopolitan vibes of Munich to the idyllic charm of Niederau if you rent a car in Germany.
7 Days Itinerary in Ski Juwel, Austria
Day 1 – Skiing in Niederau
We have pre-booked our ski equipment and lift passes online so we headed to Hotel Austria to collect them. Ski rental is in the lower part of the hotel, making it super convenient for those staying in Hotel Austria for longer.
Moreover, Hotel Austria is just a short walk from M1 gondola lift where you can get to 1436m height with or without skis. Markbachjoch summit at 1496m provides excellent views of mountainous landscape. You can also try some delicious Austrian cuisine at Kropfraderjochalm – ski hut overlooking Kropfrader lift.
We tried there goulash soup and Zillertal beer with a long history dating back to 1500. Zillertal beer is not only enjoyed by locals but has also gained international recognition, making it a true ambassador of Austrian brewing heritage. However, let me explain how we got to Kropfraderjochalm from our hotel in Niederau in the first place.
Beginner Friendly Ski Slope
Once we had successfully gathered our ski equipment from Hotel Austria, we returned to Ungnadenlift M9. Considering our prolonged hiatus from skiing, spanning nearly a decade, we decided to commence our thrilling expedition by conquering a beginner-friendly ski slope that lay just 10 minutes walk from Hotel Austria or 1 minute walk from Hotel & Alpin Lodge Der Wastlhof.
Intermediate and Beginner Friendly Ski Slopes
Despite not having skied for nearly ten years, we were pleasantly surprised by how quickly we were able to pick it up again. It is like riding a bike – a skill that once learned, is never truly forgotten. So we decided to take the Lanerköpflbahn lift to the top of the mountain and try the intermediate red slope.
Verbindung Markbachjoch (piste 17) is a bit steep at the beginning but it has some gentle parts that we really enjoyed. We skied down via Märchenwiesen Abfahrt (piste 19) to Markbachjochbahn (M1). The red run combined with piste 17 and piste 19 is quite long and requires some good fitness level. I was really exhausted when I reached the bottom of the mountain in Niederau.
This is how we are back to gondola lift M1 nearby Hotel Austria. The area is fantastic for beginners due to many ski schools, easy slopes and great facilities. However, we were more curious about blue ski runs at the top of Markbachjoch so we returned there back by using Markbachjochbahn gondola lift.
At the top of Markbachjoch, we skied towards Kropfraderjochalm where we stopped for food. From there, the Kropfraderjochlift (M4) , which is a T-bar ski lift for two people can take you to blue ski runs. However, feeling extremely exhausted, I am deciding to go down with the M1 gondola lift while my partner is skiing via Märchenwiesen Abfahrt (piste 19) one more time.
Returning to hotel
We are returning to our hotel which is a 10 minutes walk away. At this moment I really wish that we could stay in Hotel Austria which is so close to Markbachjochbahn (M1). Alternatively, if you don’t want to walk long distances with your ski equipment consider renting a car. There is a huge car park opposite Hotel Austria.
Day 2 – Exploring More Ski Runs in Niederau
We are going again to Markbachjochbahn (M1) that is nearby Hotel Austria. However, this time we are exploring other ski trails in Niederau.
From the top of T- bar ski lift Kropfraderjochlift (M4) we are skiing down via Kropfrader Abfahrt (piste 21). Then, we join other skiers at Mittermoos Abfahrt (piste 23). Combination of blue and red runs provide a fantastic skiing experience. It became our favorite ski trail in Niederau that we repeated many times.
You don’t need to go down to Niederau if you get hungry, because there is Kropfraderjochalm – a ski hut nearby. We decided to stop there for lunch again because we really liked their goulash soup. Just keep in mind, they don’t accept cards so always bring some cash with you.
As it was just the beginning of the skiing season (not enough snow yet), some of the trails like Hochmuth Schneise (piste 24b) and Talabfahrt Tennladen (piste 24) were closed. However, if we would like to try black ski run there were Gipfel Abfahrt (piste 16) and Hochberg Abfahrt (piste 15) still open.
Sauna facilities in Niederau
Returning to the hotel, we plan to visit the sauna today. After an exhilarating day of skiing down the powdery slopes, there’s nothing quite like unwinding in the soothing warmth of a sauna.
Sauna therapy helps to relax your tired muscles so I highly recommend booking a hotel that offers sauna facilities. In Niederau, you can choose between Hotel Austria, Hotel Simmerlwirt or Alpine Collection Wildschönau that are also very close to ski lifts.
Day 3 – Skiing in Auffach and Inneralpbach
We planned to reach the Top of Alpbachtal and its observation tower that provides 360° panoramic views. Top of Alpbachtal is a contemporary design by a famous Norwegian architectural company – Snøhetta.
However, we were so impressed by this location that we didn’t even realize that the entrance was at the top station of Hornbahn 2000 (W5) and we headed straight to Hornalm. Therefore, we will return there two days later to experience some of the best views in Austria once again.
How to get to Hornbahn and Hornalm from Niederau?
Getting to Hornalm located at 2032m from Niederau is a combination of a bus journey and skiing in Tyrol’s mountains. The Wildschönau Card and season ski pass offer an added benefit of complimentary access to the local ski bus network. This invaluable perk allows skiers and snowboarders to conveniently commute between their accommodation and the ski resorts for free.
We are taking a free bus from Niederau to Auffach that is operating at regular intervals, allowing us to easily plan our day on the slopes, knowing that transportation is readily available.
This service not only enhances the accessibility of the ski areas but also contributes to reducing traffic congestion and environmental impact by encouraging the use of public transportation.
The nearest bus stop to our hotel is Niederau Lanerköpfllift by Spar supermarket. If you are looking for a bit of luxury, consider staying in the 4-star Hotel & Alpin Lodge Der Wastlhof which is just a short walk away from Niederau Lanerköpfllift.
You can also catch ski bus number 770 to Auffach from a few other locations including Niederau Markbachjochbahn. Hotel Austria is just one minute walk away.
Once you get into the bus you will pass the charming villages of Oberau and Mühltal. The Ski bus stops by Schatzbergbahn I (S1 lift) in Auffach, minimizing walking distance with your ski equipment.
Step 1 – Getting to Hornbahn and Hornalm from Auffach
From Auffach we are taking S1, then S2 lift to Berggasthof Schatzbergalm. Nestled high up in the majestic Alps, at an impressive altitude of 1,800 meters above sea level, Berggasthof Schatzbergalm is a dream location to stay for a few nights.
However, due to limited time (last descent 4:30pm) and long distances that we have to conquer, we can’t stay here for a longer time. We are skiing down via Verbindung Hahnkopf Abfahrt (piste 6) to take Hahnkopfbahn lift S4.
This chairlift is taking us to the summit of Schatzberg at 1903m. From there we have to go down on the other side of the mountain using Verbindung Sektion II (J2) and Verbindung Sektion I (J1) lifts.
Step 2 – Getting to Hornbahn and Hornalm from Inneralpbach
In Inneralpbach village that is located at 1050 m in Tyrol, we are taking the Pöglbahn Mittelstation (W13) and Pöglbahn (W12) lifts to the top station. This time we have to ski down to get to Hornbahn 2000 (W5) chairlift lift that is the last ascent before reaching the top of Alpbachtal.
We are choosing blue ski runs such as Zufahrt Kohlgrubenlift (piste 61), Zu-& Abfahrt Hornbahn 2000 (piste 52) and red ski run Horn Abfahrt (piste 53). Finally, we can just relax and admire the views of beautiful Austrian mountains.
Step 3 – Reaching Hornbahn and Hornalm
Some people decide to climb Wiedersberger Horn at an impressive altitude of 2128 meters. Its unique pyramid shape sets it apart from the surrounding peaks, making it a true icon of the region.
Instead of climbing we decided to stop at Hornalm for our favourite Zillertal beer and incredible views from the restaurant. Perched at the summit of the picturesque Alpbachtal, this renowned restaurant is a true gem amidst the breathtaking Austrian Alps.
Step 4 – Skiing from top of Alpbachtal
From the top we skied down via red run Horn Abfahrt (piste 53), blue runs Abfahrt 2000 (piste 58), Zu-& Abfahrt Hornbahn 2000 (piste 52) and red run Skiweg Familien Abfahrt (piste 46b). Our plan was to follow Familien Abfahrt (piste 46a) instead of Skiweg Familien Abfahrt (piste 46b), however somehow we missed it so we decided to take Gmahbahn (W4 lift) to ski down again.
This time we followed blue ski trails Zufahrt Kohlgrubenlift (piste 61), Hornboden Abfahrt (piste 63), Familien Abfahrt (piste 46) and Familien Abfahrt (piste 46a). Our plan was to take Wiedersbergerhornbahn II (W2) lift, however I turned a bit too early to the bottom of Gmahbahn (W4 lift).
The art of navigating ski runs in mountains involves carefully choosing your path, reading the terrain, and adjusting your technique to conquer each slope with grace and precision.
It is not uncommon to find oneself on the wrong ski run, particularly when multiple trails intersect. Navigating through the intricate network of ski trails can be challenging, and it is easy to make a wrong turn.
It is crucial to familiarize yourself with the different ski run numbers. Each trail is assigned a specific number, which helps in identifying and locating the desired route. By remembering these numbers, you can ensure that you stay on the right track and avoid any confusion or detours.
Step 5 – Getting back to Niederau
Around 2pm we decided to slowly go back as we needed to reach the top of Gmahkopf and Shatzberg to get down to Auffach. We are taking Gmahbahn (W4), Pöglbahn Mittelstation (W13), Pöglbahn (W12), Verbindung Sektion II (J2) and Verbindung Sektion I (J1) lifts.
One hour later we found ourselves next to Wurmegg Hochleger where we stopped for a chicken burger with fries. The views from the restaurant and its viewing terrace are breathtaking so I highly recommend visiting it.
Just keep in mind that the last warm order is at 3:30pm and the restaurant is closing at 4pm. Both, Hornalm at the top of Alpbachtal and Wurmegg Hochleger at the top of Shatzberg are taking card payments, so you don’t have to worry about bringing cash with you.
Around 3:30pm we are skiing down via Verbindung Talabfahrt (piste 5) to the top station of Schatzbergbahn II (S2 lift). It looks like there is a pretty cool après-ski party next to Berggasthof Schatzbergalm. Unfortunately, we need to get back to our hotel in Niederau so we have to go down to Auffach.
The ski bus is already waiting by Schatzbergbahn I (S1 lift) so we can quickly jump in. There are several bus stops between Auffach and Niederau such as Oberau or Mühltal so we are getting back to the hotel around 4:30pm.
To sum up, this long journey is well worth incredible views. However, for our skiing level we feel more confident at Niederau. Many of the ski trails from the top of Alpbachtal are narrow and much more crowded. I am sure that more experienced skiers will love this location.
Day 4 – Exploring Niederau and Oberau
We decided to ski in Niederau because we feel that the slopes are not as icy as those in Inneralpbach and Auffach. North facing slope in Niederau provides better snow conditions. Don’t worry about the shade as there is plenty of sun at the top of Markbachjoch where you can enjoy sunshine by one of the ski huts such as Markbachjochalm or Rübezahlhütte.
To warm up, firstly we are going to Ungnadenilift (M9) opposite the Hotel & Alpin Lodge Der Wastlhof. The blue ski run is very wide and not too crowded. Although it is very easy for us, we can gain some nice speed that we really enjoyed.
Then, we take the Lanerköpflbahn (M2) lift and ski down via Verbindung Markbachjoch (piste 17). We don’t want to climb up to the top of Markbachjoch (M1) so we are skiing via Märchenwiesen Abfahrt (piste 19), which made me super tired on my first day. I am not really looking forward to it, but in the end I will really enjoy it.
This red ski run is quite steep at the beginning so I have to stop multiple times to rest for a bit. However, I fell in love with the bottom part of Märchenwiesen Abfahrt (piste 19). At the end you can just enjoy a very long and relatively flat ski trail at decent speed.
From there we are taking Markbachjoch (M1) lift to repeat our favorite ski run from day 2. One thing that we notice is that Kropfraderjochlift (M4) can get a bit busy due to many ski schools in this area.
Evening walk from Niederau to Oberau
In the evening we are going to Oberau to see the Dragon Winter Night event. It takes approximately 50 minutes to walk from Niederau to Oberau. Alternatively, you can take a shuttle bus between those villages.
If you decide to walk, Panoramaweg Wildschönau is a scenic trail that winds its way from Niederau to Oberau. Along the way, you’ll encounter many interesting sculptures.
You can also stop by Wildschönauer Bergbauernmuseum z ‘Bach where the rich history and heritage of mountain farming come to life. If you stay in one of the hotels that offers Wildschönau Card such as Hotel Austria, Hotel Simmerlwirt or Harmony Hotel Harfenwirt you can visit this museum for free.
During Dragon Winter Night for both young and old, there was an unforgettable ride on the Alpine railway called “Drachenflitzer”. What I really like about this roller coaster is that you could accelerate or break at any time to adjust the speed that suits you best.
After the event, we are going to see a couple of sacred buildings. The picturesque village of Oberau is home to a magnificent baroque church. Known as St Margareth’s, this church has earned the nickname of the Wildschönau Cathedral due to its remarkable size and significance.
Another interesting example is St Anthony’s Chapel. As we wander through the charming streets, we are greeted by a myriad of architectural styles that tell the story of Oberau’s rich history.
The architectural landscape of Oberau is a true feast for the eyes, with each building showcasing its own unique character and charm.
Day 5 – Top of Albachtal
We are planning to reach the majestic Alpbachtal observation tower again. Just like on day 3, we will embark on the same routes that have been tried and tested. These routes have proven to be both challenging and rewarding, offering breathtaking views and a sense of accomplishment to all who dare to venture upon them.
It takes a bit of time to get there so we are stopping at Hornalm restaurant for food. I see some people ordering Dampfnudel, which looks really nice but at that time I had no clue what it was called. After some research I found out that Dampfnudel is a dumpling which is a popular dish in Germany, Austria, France and Switzerland.
Instead we ordered Kasnocken, also known as Spaetzle with cheese and onions. This delectable dish consists of small dumplings made from a simple dough mixture of flour, eggs, and water. Once the Kasnocken are cooked to perfection, they are typically served with caramelized onions.
Skiing from top of Schatzberg
Unfortunately, our original plan to enjoy some skiing from the peak of Schatzberg may need to be reconsidered. It seems that by the time we make our way back down to Inneralpbach and up to Schatzberg, we might not have enough time left.
The only downside is that even a small mistake or taking the wrong ski run cost us a significant amount of extra time. This is because we would have to rely on the lifts to take us back up to the starting point, which can be time-consuming.
Once we get to the top station of Schatzbergbahn II (S2 lift), I am taking a gondola down to Auffach. My partner is skiing down via Schatzberg Abfahrt (piste 2) and Talabfahrt (piste 1).
We are getting back to the hotel for dinner where we enjoy among others Apple strudel. This delightful treat has become a symbol of culinary excellence in Austria, Bavaria, the Czech Republic, Northern Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, and other nations that were once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Day 6 – Ski Juwel and Swarovski Kristallwelten
For our last day of skiing we are going to Markbachjoch (M1) lift near Hotel Austria. From the top of Markbachjoch we repeat our favourite ski runs Kropfrader Abfahrt (piste 21) and Mittermoos Abfahrt (piste 23). Snow conditions are excellent, probably the best from all ski trails that we have tried.
There are certain snow conditions that are not ideal for skiing. One such condition is known as “ice” or “hard-packed” snow. This occurs when the snow has been compacted and frozen, resulting in a surface that is extremely hard and slippery.
Skiing on ice can be challenging and dangerous, as it reduces the skier’s ability to control their speed and direction. Additionally, the lack of grip on icy slopes increases the risk of falls and injuries.
I have fallen a few times when we were skiing from top of Alpbachtal due to uneven texture and inconsistent density of snow. While in Niederau it was much easier to maintain balance and control.
Skiing on such as snow requires constant adjustments in technique and can be physically demanding. If you are beginner or intermediate level I would recommend skiing in Niederau.
Auffach and Inneralpbach are definitely better for more advanced skiers that love challenging runs. You will also find there a diverse range of slopes suitable for all skill levels. However, snow conditions for beginners are much better in Niederau.
How to get to Swarovski Kristallwelten from Niederau?
Our plan is to also visit Swarovski Kristallwelten so we are returning our equipment around 12am to a ski rental located in Hotel Austria. From there we are taking bus number 770 to Wörgl Hauptbahnhof.
Unfortunately, the Wildschönau Card or ski pass cannot be used for travel in Wörgl, so it is necessary for us to purchase tickets directly from the bus driver. Once we arrive at Wörgl Hauptbahnhof, we will then need to buy train tickets to Fritzens-Wattens Bahnhoh.
It’s important to note that the journey from Wörgl to Fritzens-Wattens Bahnhof does not have a direct train route. However, we can easily make a transfer at Schwaz. Once we reach Schwaz, we will switch trains and continue our journey to Fritzens-Wattens Bahnhof.
It takes approximately 45 minutes to walk from Fritzens-Wattens Bahnhof to Swarovski Kristallwelten. Swarovski Crystal Worlds is a captivating destination that showcases the brilliance and beauty of Swarovski crystals.

The museum entrance itself is a work of art. As you enter, be prepared to be dazzled by the brilliance of crystal, as it sparkles and shimmers in every corner. The first room is Blue Hole where you will see the largest hand cut crystal in the world.

Day 7 – Hexenhäusl Niederau and Returning Home
Our final day in Niederau was the perfect opportunity to treat ourselves to a delightful culinary adventure at Hexenhäusl Niederau. Eager to savor the local flavors, we couldn’t resist ordering a steaming glass of mulled wine, accompanied by succulent skewers of pork and chicken.
As our plates (big wooden chopping boards) arrived, adorned with a colorful array of mouthwatering delicacies, the entire restaurant seemed to turn their heads in awe. The presentation was simply exquisite, and we savored each delectable bite.
Following our delightful meal at Hexenhäusl Niederau, we found ourselves with a little extra time before our scheduled pickup to the airport. Wanting to make the most of our visit to Niederau, we decided to explore the charming local church.
What to Pack for a Ski Holiday?
To ensure you have a memorable and comfortable trip, it’s essential to pack the right gear and clothing. Start with the basics, such as thermal layers, ski socks, and a good quality ski jacket and ski pants.
