When we visited Harlech Castle, we also decided to check out Harlech Beach. It quickly became one of the most beautiful beaches we’ve seen in Wales. The gorgeous sand dunes are a highlight, which is why this area is a National Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The beach stretches out beautifully a few miles, allowing for long, enjoyable strolls. As we walked, we admired the breathtaking views of the Snowdonia mountains in the distance. It was a perfect day spent in beautiful surroundings where we were able to learn about the history of Harlech Castle and take in the views surrounding the beach.
We found it easy to access the beach from Ffordd Glan Mor Parking. There are also a few restaurants, cafes, and shops close by. Moreover, Harlech Beach is dog-friendly, making it perfect for walks with your furry friend.

Harlech Beach boasts a prime location in close proximity to Snowdonia National Park. Additionally, it is situated only a short drive of less than 10 minutes from the historic Harlech Castle, allowing visitors to enjoy both the stunning natural scenery and the rich cultural heritage of the area in one day trip.
What I find particularly delightful is its proximity to other beautiful beaches in Wales, such as Barmouth or Morfa Nefyn. In my view, Harlech Beach stands out as one of the best beaches in Wales. Remarkably, despite its stunning scenery, it continues to be one of the UK’s hidden gems.

🚆 BY TRAIN
Traveling from Birmingham to Harlech is possible via a direct train, but be ready for a journey that lasts around 4 hours. Upon reaching Harlech Train Station, you’ll find that it’s only a brief 0.8-mile stroll, which typically takes about 16 minutes to reach the beautiful Harlech Beach. If your starting point is Shrewsbury, you’ll enjoy a quicker train ride of approximately 3 hours.
For those setting out from Manchester, the journey involves a transfer in Shrewsbury, which extends the total travel time to about 5 hours. Shrewsbury is a lovely town with attractions like the historic Georgian Prison, making it a worthwhile stop. If your schedule allows, consider spending a few days soaking in the charm of this area.
If you’re traveling from Liverpool, you’ll need to change trains in Wolverhampton, leading to a journey that takes nearly 6 hours. Alternatively, you could head to Chester first, a town known for its stunning architecture, and then catch a train to Shrewsbury before boarding a direct train to Harlech. Overall, the travel time can vary between 5 hours and 10 minutes to 5 hours and 50 minutes, so it is worth considering planning a multi-day trip if you decide to travel by train.

Reaching Harlech Beach is most conveniently done by car, and I suggest parking at the Ffordd Glan Mor Parking area, which is located close to the beach. From this parking spot, you can enjoy a 0.3-mile walk that should take you about 7 minutes to complete. Just a little note: there is a fee for using this car park.
If you’re traveling from Liverpool, you can expect the drive to take around 2 hours and 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the traffic and the route you choose. On our visit, we decided to take a scenic route back through Caernarfon, which allowed us to visit the impressive castle and make the most of our day.
For those coming from Manchester, the drive will take at least 2 hours and 50 minutes, with three different routes to consider. You might enjoy a drive through the charming village of Betws-y-Coed, opt for a coastal route that includes stops at attractions like Conwy Castle, or take a drive that leads you near the beautiful Bala Lake and Trawsfynydd Lake. If you’re starting from Birmingham, plan for a journey of about 2 hours and 50 minutes to 3 hours and 20 minutes.
Are Dogs Allowed on Harlech Beach?
If you’re curious about whether Harlech Beach welcomes dogs, you’ll be happy to know that it is indeed dog-friendly throughout the entire year. However, during the summer season, specifically from April 1st to September 30th, a portion of the northern half of the beach is designated as a no-dog zone, so it’s important to plan your visit accordingly.
Sand Dunes
What truly sets Harlech Beach apart is undoubtedly the stunning sand dunes. Having previously explored the renowned sand dunes of Formby Beach, I found the dunes at Harlech Beach to be even more enchanting.
The Morfa Harlech National Nature Reserve boasts one of the most significant and actively growing dune systems in the UK, and it is among the few such reserves in Wales. This nearly continuous stretch of sand dunes, extending from Morfa Dyffryn Naturist Beach to Harlech Beach, features incredibly rare areas of bare sand that serve as a habitat for unique plant and animal species.
Harlech Dunes Fauna and Flora
On our visit to Harlech Beach in September, I was enchanted by the tall grasses that blanket the sand dunes. These dense, spiky grasses are a common sight along windswept coastlines and play a crucial role in stabilizing the dunes. Their fibrous roots help bind the sand, fostering the growth of other plant species.
During the spring and summer months, keep an eye out for the vibrant three-coloured dune pansy, pyramidal orchid, or the scarce bee orchid. If you’re fortunate, you might even spot a delicate maiden pink in bloom.
When the dry dune grasslands are in bloom, they become a haven for various butterflies and moths, including the six-spot burnet moth and the common blue and small copper butterflies. Additionally, some of the rarest mining bees and solitary wasps rely on the bare sand areas for their survival.
From March to July, the ringed plover nests along the beach, so it’s essential to avoid disturbing them! The dunes are also home to breeding birds like the skylark and stonechat, while redshank and lapwing can be found in the saltmarsh. In the winter months, wading birds such as oystercatchers, dunlins, and sanderlings forage along the shoreline, while wildfowl take advantage of the estuaries and saltmarsh for feeding.
Harlech Beach Tide Times
There are numerous online resources available for checking the tide times at Harlech Beach. However, we didn’t prioritize looking up the tide schedules before our trip to Harlech Beach. In my opinion, it wasn’t as crucial as it was for our trip to Hilbre Island, which can only be reached during low tide.
Reflecting on the photos we took, it seems likely that our visit to Harlech Beach coincided with low tide. The darker, wet sand visible in the images indicates how far the waves had receded during low tide. Even when the tide is high, I believe there is still a generous expanse of sand that allows visitors to wander and enjoy the stunning scenery of this beach.
Can You Swim in Harlech Beach?
Harlech Beach offers a beautiful setting for a swim, with its inviting clear waters. However, it’s essential to keep in mind that there are no lifeguards on duty, which means swimmers should be cautious. Sometimes you can spot jellyfish in the area, which is worth keeping an eye out for.
Swimmers should also be aware of the potential for strong currents and large waves that can break unexpectedly. These factors can make swimming more challenging, so it’s wise to assess the conditions before entering the water.
Are There Any Shops Near Harlech Beach?
Many visitors are curious about the shopping options in Harlech. While there are a handful of quaint little shops where you can purchase some food items, don’t anticipate finding large supermarkets in the area. Therefore, it’s wise to pack some snacks before you set off for Harlech Beach.
